Viergutz, Jay A. (13 MAR 1955 - 16 MAY 2014)

Jay A. Viergutz, 59, town of Medford, died on Friday, May 16 at his home, under the care of his family.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 20 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford, with Father Gerard Willger and Deacon Joe Stefancin officiating. Pallbearers were Orin Wegerer, Dave Shadrick, Travis Ziembo, and Jack, Shane, Richard "Slats," Ryan and Jason "Eddie" Viergutz.

Hemer Funeral Homes of Medford and Rib Lake assisted the family with arrangements.

Jay Viergutz was born on March 13, 1955 in Marshfield to the late Harvey Henry and Shirley Lila (Block) Viergutz. He attended Holy Rosary Catholic School in Medford and was a 1973 graduate of Medford High School. He worked at Briggs and Stratton in Milwaukee, then at Osmose Railroad of Madison.

On August 21, 1976 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, he married Valerie "Val" L. Wegerer, who survives. He worked at Deep Rock and Rudolph's Standard, then he worked as a maintenance man for Memorial Hospital, Holy Rosary Catholic Church and School and Medford Middle School until ill health forced his retirement.

He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and past member of Chelsea Bowmen's Club and Tee Hi Golf Club. He was a firefighter for the Medford Fire Department, a Taylor County EMT, and had served as a deputy coroner/medical examiner. He enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and grandchildren, fishing, hunting, golfing, playing cards, making firewood and the outdoors.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two children, Mandi Sue Viergutz of Madison and Jason "Eddie" (Marijane) Viergutz of Dorchester; two brothers, Jack (Pam) Viergutz and Shane (Jenn) Viergutz, both of Medford; step-mother, Marge Viergutz of Medford; two step-sisters, Carla (Dave) Brost of Medford and Christine (Andy) Slote of Plano, Texas; and two grandchildren, Riley and Madeline Viergutz of Dorchester.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the family to be designated at a later date.
