St. Bernard-St. Hedwig (Celebrating 100 Years - July 2014)

The present St. Bernard’s Church will be celebrating its 100th year in July 2014, and a celebration commemorating this momentous occasion will be held on Sunday, August 10, beginning with a Mass of Thanksgiving, celebrated by the Bishop of the La Crosse Diocese at 10:00 a.m. to start the day’s festivities.

A committee has been formed to spearhead the event. Anyone wishing to jump on the bandwagon is most welcome. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 26, at 6:00 p.m. in the church basement.

Plans are underway to produce a book of memorabilia of the last 100 years, which will be on sale to the public. Anyone who has pictures or articles of interest they would like to see added to this book are encouraged to submit them to the St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Rectory at P.O. Box 329, Thorp, WI 54771

St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Parish (Celebrates Centennial – 10 August 2014)

Bishop William Callahan of the La Crosse Diocese, along with several priests and area deacons, were present to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone of the St. Bernard Catholic Church.

On the west end of Thorp stands a landmark. On August 10th, the St. Bernard-St. Hedwig parish came together to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the original St. Bernard’s Church building, remembering the struggles and joys of those who came before them, and giving thanks to God for the many blessings the parish has received.

Bishop William Callahan celebrated the 2:00 p.m. Mass with visiting and past clergy, nuns, parish members and out-of-town guests. The three parish choirs collaborated on the music for the celebration. Following the Mass approximately 350 attendees were treated to an excellent chicken barbecue cooked by the Thorp American Legion, fresh-picked sweet corn, and other seasonable produce and food provided and prepared by parish members. It was a memorable day for all.

The adult choir, Polish choir, and children’s choir of St. Bernard-St. Hedwig parish joined voices and provided inspirational music before and during Mass.
