Smith, Samuel J. (7 SEP 1867 - 1 FEB 1952)

Samuel James Smith, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith, was born Sept. 7, 1867 in Toronto, Canada. At the age of seven, he came with his parents to Black River Falls and a short time later moved to a farm north of Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.) near giles Creek.

In 1894 he was united in marriage to Anita More. After their marriage they moved to a farm five miles north of Greenwood, now owned and occupied by his brother Mark Smith.

Mrs. Smith passed away Jan. 4, 1939 and two years after he went to Milwaukee and resided with his daughter, Mrs. Catherine Henrichs. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America.

Mr. Smith, who has been ill for the past five years, passed away at St. Camillus Hospital, Milwaukee, on Friday, Feb. 1, 1952. The body was brought to Greenwood on Monday and on Tuesday, Feb. 5th funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. at the Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church, the Rev. Chas. Koch officiating. He was laid to rest in the Greenwood Cemetery.

During the service Mrs. Daniel Olson and Mrs. Bertha Elmer sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Sweetly Resting," accompanied by Mrs. Adolph Meyer at the organ.

The pallbearers were John Speich, Jake Speich, Roy Rossman, Charles Markee, Oliver Windom and H.R. Baird.

Mr. Smith is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Catherine Henrichs, Milwaukee; and Mrs. George (Blanche) Braun, Greenwood; six grandchildren, Catherine Braun, Eau Claire; Verna Braun, Milwaukee; Jean Braun at home, James Henrichs, Minneapolis; Jean Bow and Arthur Henrichs, Milwaukee; two great-grandchildren, a brother Mark Smith, Greenwood; two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Davis, Granton and Mrs. Elizabeth Vine, Janesville.

His parents, three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.
