John Schmid has gone to Eleva to stay a couple of months and buy potatoes for J. Rivard, of Fairchild.

Dr. E. Rogers, dentist of Augusta, was a visitor with friends in town last Sunday. The doctor is considering the question of making a professional visit here every two weeks.

A. Rosenberg of the firm of Rosenberg & Liebermann, of Milwaukee, is here buying a carload of clover seed.

A big loss by fire occurred on the Carter farm a mile south of the village late Tuesday afternoon, the large hay-barn, stable, granary, hog pens, machine sheds, chicken house, about 70 tons of hay, straw stacks, and 800 bushels of grain, being destroyed. The fire was discovered about 5:30 when one of the near neighbors saw smoke issuing from the cupola of the barn. He immediately gave the alarm and helped to get some colts out of the barn. Word was phoned to town and several loads of helpers hurried to the farm, and together with the neighbors who had gathered, saved all of the machinery and farming tools and part of the contents of the granary. A part of one of the machine sheds was saved which will give Mr. Baumgartner some shelter for his stock until he rebuilds. The farm is now owned by M.B. Baumgartner, he having bout it a year ago. The large barn which was burned was built by Mr. Carter some twenty years ago, at a cost of $3000, and the present owner spent $1500 in repairing and remodeling it last fall. He also built a new granary at a cost of $600. Mr. Baumgarnter estimates his loss at $6000, which includes the barn building, 70 tons of hay, granary and about a third loss on 1400 bushels of grain which it contained, sheds, pens, straw and some small tools. There was $1800 insurance on the barn.

The silent messenger of Death has been here and taken one of our oldest settlers, Mrs. James McBride, destroying happiness in the home and bringing sorrow to her friends. Mrs. McBride was born in Indiana July 18th, 1837, and after a brief illness of untold suffering, died at her home in this place Sept. 27th, 1906.
