Former Pastor Passes Away

The Rev. Asa Neil Conklin, 80, retired Methodist minister, died recently at Madison after a long illness. He was a former general Sec. of the YMCA at Madison and served pastorates at Spencer, Glen Flora, Bloomington & Benton before retiring in 1923.

Rev. Asa Neil Conklin was pastor of the Spencer Methodist church for four years.

During his pastorate here he organized and instructed the Spencer Junior Band and a picture taken of them in 1902 included the following Spencer youths: Glenn, Grant and Seth Damon, Ray Guy and James Ingham, Harley Graves, Lee Nelson, Claude Dygart, Foster McIlhattan, Allan Johnstone, Lee Pickett, Henry Malchow & Rev. Conklin’s son, George. Rev. Conklin was also on one of the pictures.

The boys suits were of blue with gold stripes and the coats and trousers were made by the ladies of the W R C and the ladies of the Methodist Church.

Rev. Conklin did much good with the young folks of the village and all loved and revered him. He also married many of the young folks of those days among whom were Mr. and Mrs. George Hayward and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Prehn.

Rev. and Mrs. Conklin spent the winter with their daughter who is superintendant [sic] of the Methodist Old Folks Home at Sparta.
