Schmidt, Basil M. (9 January 1922 - 16 January 1969)

Basil M. Schmidt, 47, owner and operator of the Schmidt Oil Company in East Troy, died suddenly Thursday of an apparent cerebral hemorrhage suffered early that day at his home.

Mr. Schmidt was born January 9, 1922, in Norwalk. He was the son of the late Frank and Helena Schmidt of Neillsville. He was raised and attended school in Neillsville. On April 15, 1948, he was married to the former Mary Schwartz in East Troy. He moved to East Troy in 1948, where he worked for the Ahrens Oil Company, purchasing the business in November 1959.

He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus, Council, No. 4579 and the Wisconsin Petroleum Association.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, John and Jeffrey, and two daughters, Janet and Judy, all at home; five brothers, Valerian of Waukesha, Norbert of Madison, Gerald and Urban of Neillsville, and Gallus in California; three sisters, Mrs. Helen Syth of Greenwood, Mrs. Coletta Short of Neillsville and Mrs. Joan Butterfield of Waukesha.

Funeral services were held Monday at the Anderson Memorial Home in East Troy and later from St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Burial was made in the church cemetery. A rosary service was recited Sunday evening.

Relatives from this area attending the funeral Monday were Gerald Schmidt of Neillsville, Mrs. Reynold Syth of Greenwood and Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Short and Ann of Neillsville.
