Former Sitkan George Elmer Schwantes died Thursday in a Roseburg, Oregon, hospital.

He was born April 17, 1914, in Spencer, Wisconsin. Schwantes was a commercial fisherman in Sitka for many years before moving to Roseburg, where he has resided for the last six years.

Survivors include his wife, Juana; sons Pastor George Schwantes, Wisconsin; Jim Schwantes, Robert Schwantes, and Fred Schwantes, Minnesota; Carlos Schwantes and Joe Schwantes, Oregon; and daughters Patsy Kaeder and Jean Dall, Minnesota, and Emma Vera, Oregon.

Surviving brothers and sisters include Donald Schwantes, John Schwantes, and William Schwantes, Wisconsin; Elmer Schwantes, Carl Schwantes, and Frank Schwantes, Alaska; Leonard Schwantes, Washington; Violet Lein, Wisconsin, and Carolyn Melim, Illinois. Other survivors include 21 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Wilson Chapel of the Roses in Roseburg.

Family Notes: George Elmer was the son of George Fredrick William Schwantes (b. 29 Dec 1891, Milwaukee, Wis.) and Louise Meta Hattie Wellnitz (b. 13 Sep 1892, Reeseville , Wis.).  He was baptized 10 May 1914 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer, Wisconsin. He married Louisa Myrtle May Pies 20 Nov 1935 in Day County, South Dakota. 

George Elmer died at Myrtle Creek, Douglas Co., Oregon.  His son, Robert Lee Schwantes (b. 13 Oct 1939, Spencer, Wis.) died 21 Nov 1993 in St. Paul, Ramsey Co., Minn. of acute myocardial infarction in the United Hospitals.
