Christie, Eugene S. (27 September 1910 - 22 November 1980)

Funeral services were held on Tuesday early afternoon, November 25, for Eugene S. Christie, 70. He, being an avid sportsman, died of an apparent heart attack while hunting in the Town of Mentor during the first day of deer season, Saturday, November 22.

The deceased was born on September 27, 1910, in the Town of Eaton to Freeman A. and Elizabeth (McConnell) Christie. He received his primary education in an Eaton area school and graduated from Greenwood High School in 1929. He then worked for the John Wuethrich Creamery and Hoehne Hardware, both of Greenwood. On November 20, 1939, he wed Eva Kalkofen in Neillsville ceremonies.

The couple moved to Neillsville in 1940 when Christie operated a filling station and two milk routes. He later became employed by Northern States Power, working, with the utility, until his retirement several years ago. He and his wife resided at 14 Court Street, Neillsville.

Surviving him, besides his wife, are three sons, Richard of Hermiston, Or., Kenneth of La Crosse and Larry of Madison; two sisters, May Schullo of Minneapolis, and Arlene Hakes of Wis. Rapids; and three brothers, Ernest of La Crosse, Arthur of Greenwood and John of Anoka, Mn. Also surviving him are five grandchildren.

The Rev. Norman W. Lindloff officiated at the funeral services held at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Neillsville. St. John’s School Choir, accompanied by Paul Tess, offered “The 23rd Psalm” and “I’m But a Stranger Here” for the service. Serving as pallbearers, were Herman Hagedorn, Gordon Zickert, Donald Turner, Duane Peterson, Gordon Sharratt ,and William Erpenbach. Burial was made in the Greenwood Cemetery. Gesche Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Attending the service from out of town were Mr./Mrs. Richard Christie & family, Hermiston, Or.; Mr./Mrs. Kenneth Christie & family, Ernest Christie, Mr./Mrs. James Christie & family and Mrs. William Monsoor & son, all of La Crosse; Michael, Laurie, and Susan Luck and Mr./Mrs. Larry Christie, Madison; Mr./Mrs. Art Christie & family, Greenwood; and May Schullo, Jack Schullo and Mr./Mrs. Kenneth Schullo, all of Minneapolis, Mn.

Joining them were Arlene Lobner, Beatrice Kohl, Betty McFarland, Mrs. Irwin Thoma & family, Mr./Mrs. Rober Thoma & son and Mr./Mrs. Ron Hall, all of Wis. Rapids; Mr./Mrs. John Christie & family, Dayton, Mn.; Mr./Mrs. Clarence Kalkofen and Mr./Mrs. Philip Schweitzer, of Antigo; Mr./Mrs. Roy Lenz and Mike Sundt, of Jim Falls, and Lee Smiley, Thorp.

Also attending were many other friends and relatives from Greenwood, Loyal, Chili, Granton, Medford, Hatfield, Fairchild, Marshfield and Pittsville.
