The business section of the village of Unity (Clark Co., Wis.) was swept by a fire which started early Friday morning in a building owned by Julius Luchterhand and used as a millinery store and telephone exchange by the Clark County Telephone Company. The fire came from a defective thimble and had gained such headway when discovered at 6:30 that it could not be extinguished. There was a strong north wind blowing and the Drug Store owned by Dr. J.H. Clark caught fire and burned to the ground, as did two fine residences, owned by Julius Luchterhand and Chris Vogt. The Post Office and Printing Office located in the same building, and owned by E.L. Messer was badly damaged, but the building was saved. It is estimated that the fire loss was $20,000, and about half that amount was covered by insurance. The local fire brigade fought hard to keep the fire from wiping out the business section, and at 10:30 the fire was under control.
