Spaete, Mr./Mrs. Alfred (Golden – 24 June 1975)

Family and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Spaete, Rt. 2 Granton, helped make it “a wonderful day Sunday,” as the couple observed their 50th wedding anniversary with an afternoon open house at their farm home. The Spaetes were also honored at a 1 p.m. dinner at Bali Hai Supper Club.

The events were planned by the couple’s children, all of whom were present with their families.

Also, in attendance were friends from Mankato and Good Thunder, Mn., Oshkosh, Billion, and Hilbert as well as neighbors and friends from the area.

Both are natives of Germany. Alfred Spaete came to the United states in 1923 and his finance, Ida, arrived in 1925, a month before the wedding they were married June 24, 1925, in Wausau by Rev. Spiegel.

The Spaetes lived in Neillsville for five years, then traveled to Germany for a five-month visit and purchased Hart’s meat market in Granton when they returned to Wisconsin in 1930 They operated the business as a meat market and grocery store until 1933 when they rented it to his brother and entered into a meat market and grocery store partnership in Rice Lake.

They returned to Granton to operate the store there in 1942. As the building was a small one, they soon purchased the larger Sammy Schroeder store kitty-corner across the street, moved the business into the larger quarters, and installed frozen food lockers.

Mr. Spaete, who learned his trade in Germany, has been a licensed sausage maker for over 65 years. He is now semi-retired and enjoys his hobbies of beekeeping and gardening. He is a charter member of the Granton Rotary Club.

Mrs. Spaete shares her husband’s interest in gardening, with particular emphasis on flowers, and has several hobbies of her own, including handiwork and reading. She is a member of the Grant Busy Bees homemakers club and also a member of the Busy Bees Hobo Band, which gave a surprise concert at the open house.

The Spaetes, who are members of Zion Lutheran Church in Granton, have another common interest, that of planting trees on their farm. Each year, they plant a large number of such varieties as European larch, cedar, Norway pine, white pine and spruce. Why? “For the next generation to enjoy,” Ida Spaete said.

Mr. and Mrs. Spaete are parents of four children, Mrs. Al (Lydia) Cramer of Rt,.2 Pittsville, Mrs. Arlo (Elsie) Scholtz of Eau Claire, Alvin, who is with the ASCS office in Neillsville and lives in Granton, and Paul, who is a researcher in meteorology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Paul recently received his master’s degree and will begin work for his doctorate.

There are also seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
