Marcus, Hazel (24 Dec. 1907 - 23 Mar. 1958)

An autopsy, requested by Clark County authorities, was performed in the Marshfield hospital Mon. to determine the cause of the death of Mrs. Hazel Marcus, age 50, who was employed as a nurse at the Medford hospital. Mrs. Marcus, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Burris of Marshfield, was found dead at about 8:00 Sun. night in her apartment at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Toelle, Abbotsford.

Authorities making the preliminary investigation estimated that death had occurred about 24 hours earlier. A large quantity of sleeping pills were found in the apartment.

The body was discovered on a davenport by Mrs. Toelle and a neighbor. Clark county authorities called to investigate were Robert Lulloff, coroner, Ray Kutsche, sheriff, and Dale Schultz, county traffic officer.

Mrs. Toelle had spoken to Mrs. Marcus late Sat.afternoon to invite her to Sun.dinner. Alarmed when Mrs. Marcus failed to show up for dinner, or offer any explanation for her absence, Mrs. Toelle asked a neighbor to accompany her to the apartment.

A television set in the Marcus apartment was operating and the stub of a cigarette was clasped between Mrs. Marcus’ fingers. Skin burns from the cigarette were evident, authorities said.

The former Hazel Burris was born at Hallock, Minn., Dec. 24, 1907, and was married in Milwaukee to Ervin Marcus, from whom she was separated. She received her early education at Jump River schools. Previously the family also lived at Alberta, Canada, and Little Falls, Minn.

Mrs. Marcus received her training as a nurse at Medford and Milwaukee, and had made her home at Abbotsford since 1930.

Surviving are her parents; four brothers, Arvel Burris of Oshkosh, Mark Burris of Wisconsin Dells, Jerry Burris of Withee, Howard Burris of Rockford, Ill.; a sister, Mrs. Marvin (Jessie) Moore of Milwaukee. Three brothers and one sister preceded her in death.

Funeral services were conducted at the Funeral Home at Marshfield Wed. morning, Rev. J. H. Harrington, supply pastor at the Apostolic church, officiating, and internment was made in the Hillside cemetery.
