ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING

Heart-Rending Tragedy Occurred Last Sunday

Rosie Adler Killed by Her Little Brother

One of the most touching fatalities that has taken place in this community of recent years was the accidental killing of Rosie Adler, the 12 year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Adler by her brother Edward, aged eight years last Sunday afternoon. The little girl was preparing to attend church at about two o'clock when the little boy who was playing about in the same room, took down his father's breach-loading double-barreled gun, one barrel of which was charged with shot and the other rifled for a 44 caliber bullet, and while the weapon was pointed at his sister, in some unexplained manner touched off the charge of shot. The load of shot struck the girl on the right side of the head literally tearing out her brains. When the parents who were in another part of the house at the time of the discharge reached the scene they found their daughter horribly mangled and the boy rolling about in a convulsion of fear.

Aid was summoned immediately but the injured girl had expired almost instantly upon receiving the frightful wound, life being extinct before Dr. Hayward who was called at once, could reach the place. A large number of people residing in the neighborhood of the Adler residence hastened to offer assistance and consolation to the grief stricken parents who were prostrated by the shock, and the little boy who has unwittingly caused his sister's death was so terribly affected that it was feared he might lose his reason. He was finally calmed but the great calamity was a mighty blow to the peaceful home.

Municipal Judge R. E. Andrews in his capacity as a justice of the peace summoned a jury to conduct an inquest on the body and the remains were viewed soon after the accident, the taking of testimony being postponed to Monday morning. The jury met at the courtroom of the city hall at 9 a.m. Monday and examined John J. Adler and the boy Edward, both of whom related the facts. Mr. Adler was resting upon a bed in an adjoining room at the time the shot was fired. He had always kept his gun behind a door in the room where the shooting occurred and did not know that it was loaded. The boy stated that he took the gun down to play with and had no idea that it was loaded and did not know how he exploded the shell. The verdict rendered was death by the accidental discharge of a gun in the hands of Edward and was signed by the following jury: Edw. L. Reese, J. D. Giles, I. P. Tiffault, Ernest Wegner, James Feit and John A. Vogel.
