Thielke, Loverna B. “Verna” (Strankman) (June 13, 1916 - January 31, 2009)

Loverna "Verna" B. Thielke, 92, Westboro, died Saturday, Jan. 31 at her home, under the care of her family and Hope Hospice.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 5 at 11 a.m. at The United Church of Christ in Medford, with Rev. Grant Brown and Rev. Cathy Hinman officiating.

Interment will be at Medford Evergreen Cemetery II. Pallbearers will be Andy and Ian Thielke, Russell P. and Brad Roeber, Jeff Henrich and Jeff and Donavon Mitchell.

The former Loverna Strankman was born June 13, 1916 in Loverna, Saskatchewan, Canada, to the late William and Annie (Schlais) Strankman.

She attended Loverna Elementary and High School and business college in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She moved from Canada to Wisconsin in 1938. She was employed as a secretary for Neuendorf Transportation Company in Medford.

On May 6, 1939 at The United Church of Christ, she married Gordon G. Thielke, who preceded her in death on January 13, 2008. She worked as a housewife and mother while also working as a bookkeeper for Hartwig and Ruesch Furniture and as a seamstress for Schmidt Clothing.

From 1961 until her retirement, she worked as a bookkeeper for Klinner Insurance in Medford.

She was a member of The United Church of Christ, Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 254 of Medford, and Klossner-Dietzler VFW Auxiliary of Medford where she served as the first president. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, baking, canning, knitting, sewing and playing bridge.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol (Russell A.) Roeber of Spokane, Wash., and Joan (Donavon) Mitchell of Brodhead; one son, Gordon "Jake" (Diane) of Medford; a brother, Norman (Virginia) of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; a sister, Irene Moore of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada; nine grandchildren, Brad (Susan) Roeber, Martin (Shannon) Roeber, Mark (Deb) Roeber, Trisha (Todd) McGann, J.B. (Candy) Mitchell, Jeff (Kristina Lee) Mitchell, Caryn (Jeff) Henrich, Ian Thielke and Andy (Joan) Thielke; and 14 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ronald and Gordon; and two sisters, Carol Alexander and Gladys Erickson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Hope Hospice or any Shriners Hospital.
