Hales, Lucille "Lu" (Becker) (May 14, 1923 - February 17, 2009)

Lucille "Lu" Hales, 85, Rib Lake, died Tuesday, Feb. 17 at Memorial Health Center in Medford, four days after her brother Robert Becker.

A combined Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, Feb. 21 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Rib Lake, with Father Otto Bucher officiating. Interment for Lu was at Lakeview Cemetery in Rib Lake. Pallbearers were Daniel Quednow, Adam Quednow, Ron Becker, Ed Becker, Neal Olkives and Andrew Thompson.

The former Lucille Becker was born May 14, 1923 in Rib Lake to the late Frank and Celia (Skibba) Becker. She attended Ward Graded School and was a 1941 graduate of Rib Lake High School.

On April 15, 1943, she married Myron "Pinkie" Hanson, and they were later divorced.

She married Richard Hales at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Rib Lake on August 13, 1977, after a 17 year engagement.

She was the organist at Good Shepherd Catholic Church for over 50 years, was employed at the Rib Lake Nursing Home as activities director and played organ at the sing-along for over 40 years, and was employed by The Star News for over 20 years, writing a column about visitors to the area. She was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church; Lehman-Clendenning American Legion Auxiliary where she was a past secretary and carried the flag for the Memorial Day parade; the Commercial Club where she held the office of secretary; past member of Christian Mothers for which she had been secretary; past member of Little Bohemia Bowling League; current member of Rib Lake Birthday Club; and assisted at Rib Lake Elementary School with listening to the children read. She enjoyed playing bingo on the first Sunday of the month, being active in the Rib Lake community, fish fries, going to the casino, traveling and spending time with her granddaughter and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include a granddaughter, Robin (Daniel) Quednow of Wausau; two great-grandchildren, Amber Antoinette and Adam Daniel Quednow, both of Wausau; a sister, Dorothy Radtke of Clintonville; a sister-in-law, Mary Becker of Westboro; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Hales; a daughter, Antoinette "Toni" Peissig; a son-in-law, Ronald Peissig; and two brothers, Ray Becker and Robert "Bob" (Kay) Becker.

Dallmann-Kniewel Funeral Homes of Medford and Rib Lake assisted the family with arrangements.
