Kaz, Peter J. (20 MAY 1884 - 26 MAR 1964)

Peter John Kaz, of Owen (Clark Co., Wis.), formerly of Thorp, passed away March 26, 1964 at St. Joseph's Hospital at Marshfield, where he had been a patient for several weeks. He had reached the age of 79 years and 10 months.

The deceased was born on May 20, 1884 in Lithuania. He came to America at an early age and as a young man served with the 1st Division of the U.S. Army from July 18, 1913 to July 1920, taking part in the Mexican engagement and acitve in five campaigns during World War I in France.

On Oct. 16, 1920 he was united in marriage to the former Caroline Saluchka in Chicago. Seven years later the couple came to Clark County, settling on a farm in the Town of Reseburg in 1927. They operated the farm for nearly a score of years and then came to Thorp where Mr. Kaz rented the tavern then owned by Mike Snider. He later operated a tavern six miles south of Thorp until 1953 when he sold out and moved on a farm in the Town of Hoard noth of Owen.

He leaves to mourn, his wife and four sons, Richard, Los Angeles, Calif., Arthur of Omaha, Neb., and Raymond and James of Owen, and eleven grandchildren.

Funeral services for the deceased were held at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church at Owen on Monday, March 30th, with Father H.L. Crubel as celebrant of the Requiem Mass. Interment took place in the Riverside Cemetery near the Black River with military rites conferred by the American Legion Post of Owen-Withee and Thorp, where Mr. Kaz had been a member for many years.

Thorp Legionnaires served as pallbearers, Tom Polnaszek, John Barth, Wm. S. Wagner, Frank Sierocuk, Wilfred Vanderhyden and Harry Smith.
