Greenwood American Legion (Birthday - 1968)

The 49th American Legion Birthday anniversary was observed at the Legion Hall in Greenwood with an 8 o’clock dinner prepared and served by auxiliary members to 87 Legion and auxiliary members and their guests.

The commander of the local post, Floyd Plautz, gave the welcome and opening and closing prayers, with a moment of silence in memory of deceased members.

The master of ceremonies was Kenneth Speich of Greenwood, seventh district commander, who gave a brief talk on the history of Wallis-Hinker Post No. 238, of Greenwood. The post was organized 48 years ago on March 4, 1920, with 15 charter members. Plaques were presented to six living charter members. Those present to receive their plaques were: Perry Volk of Loyal, Vern Smith of Milwaukee, and M. C. Kelley of Wisconsin Rapids. Not able to attend were Dave Reese of Greenwood, Edwin Jollivette of Mulkeytown, Ill., and John Moberg of Escanaba, Mich. A letter from Mr. Moberg was read.

Deceased charter members are: Carroll Behrens, Carl Stabnow, Fred Behrens, Jerrold Syth, L. C. Clute, Lee Wallis, Leon Smith, James Hughes and Herschel Young.

The present membership of the local post is 157. Harland Haunschild, chief of police was awarded a plaque for excellence in maintaining law and order in the city.

The highlight of the evening was a talk by John Crawford of Madison, former Wood County assemblyman and presently the department of Wisconsin judge advocate.
