GEORGE SCHERER SERVICES HELD


Funeral services for George Scherer, 67, 119 Andrews St., Greenwood, Clark County, who died Aug. 19, 1975, were held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Greenwood.

 

Pallbearers were Hubert Schmitz, Gerald Denk, Art Ampe, James McConnell, Robert Vessel, and Reynold Syth.


The Rinka Funeral Home, Greenwood, was in charge of arrangements.

Scherer, George (27 March 1908 – 19 August 1975)

George Scherer, 67, died at 11 a.m. August 19 at St. Joseph Hospital, Marshfield.

Mr. Scherer was born March 27, 1908, in Jonesdale. He attended Eaton Center School. He was married June 13, 1936, to Carol Asplin, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Neillsville.

He farmed for 15 years from, 1937 to 1952 , in the Town of Eaton. He was employed at Wuethrich’s Creamery until 1972, when he retired.

He managed and played for baseball teams in the Loyal and Greenwood areas for 40 years. He was an officer in the Cloverbelt Baseball League.

On July 4, 1973, the Greenwood Baseball Park was officially dedicated as “George Scherer Athletic Park.” The Greenwood City Council had voted to proclaim the field as an honor and tribute to George Scherer, for his devotion and love for baseball.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Holy Name Society.

Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Mrs. Erven (Nancy) Sankey, Milwaukee and mrs. Chester (Susan) Turnquist of Greenwood; two sons, Richard of Greenwood and Roger of Bloomington, Mn.; 10 grandchildren ; seven step-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Cecilia Bremer of Loyal, and Mrs. Leonard (Mary) Denk of Loyal; and a b rother, Raymond Scherer of Neillsville Memorial Home.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. August 22 from St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The Rev. Robert Houston officiated. Pallbearers were Robert Vesel, Hubert Schmitz, Arthur Ampe, Reynold Syth, James McConnell and Gerald Denk.

Those who attended from away were his children, Mr. and Mrs. Erven Sankey and family of Milwaukee and Roger Scherer of Bloomington, Mn., and other relatives and friends from Marshfield, Neillsville, Oconomowoc, Eau Claire, Minneapolis, Mn., and Prophetstown, Il.
