Esselman, Joseph C. (1900 - 1982)


Joseph C. Esselman, 82, Route 2, Loyal, Town of Loyal, Clark County, died on Wednesday evening, Oct. 20, 1982, at his home. Death was due to an apparent heart attack.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 23, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Loyal. Rev. James Logan officiated and burial was in the parish cemetery.

A Parish Council of Catholic Women Rosary was said at 3:15 p.m., a Prayer Service was conducted at 8 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus Rosary was siad at 8:30 p.m., Friday.

Joseph Esselman was born to Clemens and Barbara (nee Christman) Esselman on Aug. 18, 1900, in Loyal. He received his education at Lyons and St. Anthony's Parochial Schools, and Loyal High School.

On June 12, 1923, he and Phyllis Altemus were married at Neillsville.

He was a Holstein dairy farmer until retiring in 1966, when he sold the farm to his son Lawrence.

He served for 22 yeas on Lyons school District Board and ten years on the Loyal Board of Education. He was a director of Citizens State Bank of Loyal for 18 years, serving four years as bank president and one year as Chairman of the Board of Directors. He retired in 1972 from the bank board. In 1954, he was elected clerk of the Township of Loyal, for which her served 24 years.

He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and a life member of the Knights of Columbus.

Surviving him are his wife, Phyllis four sons, Charles of Oshkosh, and Clemens, Richard and Lawrence, all of Loyal one daughter, Mrs. James (Mary Ann) Beaver of Loyal two sisters, Mrs. P.J. (Dorothy) Dolan of San Mateo, Cal. And Sister M. Ann Esselman of La Crosse 24 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents and two grandchildren.

Serving as pallbearers were his grandsons, Tom, Paul, William, Patrick, Peter, and Virgil Esselman, Mike Beaver and Robert Bliesener.

Rinka Funeral Home, Loyal handled arrangements.
