Hove, Joyce Ilene (6 November 1938 – 15 November 2020)

Joyce Ilene Farley (Bollom) Hove of Black River Falls passed away on Sunday, November 15, 2020 at the age of 82.

She was born on November 6,1938 in Ladysmith, the daughter of Bernita and Jarold Farley. After graduating from high school in Tony, she attended Minnesota Bible College before marrying the love of her life, Ervin Bollom. They started their life together and began a family.

Joyce raised their four boys, Randy, Ron, Duane and Dean, while Ervin refined his craft as a bench jeweler and watch technician. They spent time in California and Milwaukee before moving to Black River Falls to start their own business, Bollom’s Jewelry. Together they built the business, with Joyce working the showroom, managing the finances and creating marketing programs to support seasonal events and inventory specials. Her skills as a seamstress were featured in the store window displays and supporting community events such as the annual Crazy Day’s downtown festival with costumes and a parade.

The family grew when they opened their hearts and home to an adopted baby girl, Mary a few years after moving to Black River Falls. Family camping trips, picnics on the river bank, occasional trips to the emergency room for stitches, weekend trips to the cabin and all things hunting and fishing filled time away from the business. A tragic hunting accident took Ervin’s life at the age of 37 and left Joyce to raise the family and continue running the business by herself. She did so with immense fortitude and determination. A while later, she married Eli Hove and they had a son, Brad. Hockey tournaments, horse shows, and computer games were added to the family activities with Joyce leading the way. She was an incredible source of energy and optimism for all six of her children.

She was a founder, charter member and tireless supporter of the Black River Falls Church of Christ (now Community Christian Church) from its earliest days meeting in the basement of the old Jackson County Bank. She took great pride in the growth of the church and its first move to Van Buren Street and treasured her church family dearly.

Her special interests included quilting, reading, music, theater, puzzles, games, traveling and championing her grandchildren in everything they did. Every child, grandchild, and great-grandchild received at least one quilt made special for them – their quilt. A week didn’t go by without a trip to the library- although she missed the old one and the way it smelled like books. A warning to anyone that played Yahtzee or Carrom with her, she was a master. She would travel anywhere and especially enjoyed overnight train trips. Her greatest gift was being Mom and Grandma. She loved the sleepovers, hearing what was being learned in school, helping with life’s problems and always praying for each and everyone’s happiness.

Joyce was preceded in death by her first husband, Ervin Bollom and her second husband, Eli Hove. Her parents, Bernita and Jarold Farley, her oldest brother, Raymond Farley, and youngest sister, Wanda Blazer.

She is survived by her sister, Wilma Coggins and brother, Lynn (Rachel) Farley; six children Randy Bollom, Ronald Bollom, Duane (Sheryl) Bollom, Dean Bollom, Mary (Larry) Montgomery and Brad Hove; ten grandchildren Brian (Dora) Bollom, Stephanie Bollom, Alex Bollom, McKenzie Otterson, Brady Hove, Ella Hove, James Bollom, Jason Bollom, Elizabeth (Mike) Scheine and Christine (Andrew) Eickstead; and nine great-grandchildren, Chase Bollom, Angel Bollom, Alexa Miller, Caydence Miller, Sarah Scheine, Catherine Scheine, Andrew Scheine, Kylie Eickstead and Austin Eickstead.

Visitation will be held on Friday, December 4 at the Community Christian Church in Black River Falls from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 5 at 10:00 a.m. also at the Community Christian Church. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Community Christian Church or planting a tree in her memory.
