Neillsville resident Cleone Zink was recently presented a U. S. flag from her grandson for her efforts in encouraging others to send letters to military members stationed in Iraq.

When Zink’s grandson, Sgt. Joshua Zink, arrived in Iraq in March 2007, he noticed some of the 17,000 U. S. Marines and Air Wing members stationed there did not receive mail.

Zink mentioned to his grandmother something should be done for those who did not receive mail.  Cleone Zink spread the word to area residents, encouraging them to write letters to them.

Because of Zink’s efforts, her grandson presented her a U. S. flag during Christmas.  The flag was taken into combat onboard the Marine Light Attack Helicopter flown by Squadron 267 "Gideon."

Joshua Zink was recently discharged from the U. S. Marines, but another one of Cleone Zink’s grandsons, Zachary Zink, will soon be in Iraq; he is a member of a Madison National Guard unit.

Cleone Zink would like Neillsville residents to continue to write to troops; she recognizes how much it means for service members to receive mail.

"[Mail is] so much appreciated," said Zink.
