James W. Lynch, 1914 ca.

 

James Lynch was born March 6, 1807 in Pittsburg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.  He moved to Armstrong County, Wisconsin with his parents in 1828 and married Margaret E. Kirkland in 1935.  She was a native of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.  James worked on his father's farm until 1856 and then relocated to Neillsville, Clark Co., Wisconsin.  He initially owned a farm of more than two quarter sections, but upon retirement he sold most of the land but retained the dwelling as his home.  James served as the Clerk of the 6th Circut Court [1863], Clark County Coroner in 1865 [1867] [1867A], on the 1914 Clark County Board for the first ward of Neillsville, as well as the Town Treasurer and School Treasurer in various years.  He was known to be an honest, kind man who was respected for his quiet and inoffensive manner.  He was trustworthy because of his unimpeachable honesty, a caring father, good neighbor and conscientious citizen.

 

The Lynch attended to the Methodist Episcopal Church in Neillsville.

 

He and Margaret were the parents of eleven children.  The seven living in 1880 were: John H., Mary Ann, deceased, Alice A. (Mrs, F Salina (now Mrs. Sturgeon, b. 1845), Mellissa J. and Elizabeth, deceased, Cordelia (Mrs. Hewett), J. Wick, Sheldon, Byron D. (b. 1860) and Jeramiah W. (b. 1852).

 

James died in the home of at the home of his son-inlaw, Mr. S. B. Hewett, in Tavares Florida, in the early spring of 1885, on the 22nd of April.  Mr. and Mrs. Lynch had been vacationing in Florida, hoping to return in the spring much improved by their escape from the rigor of the climate of Wisconsin. But the change was too great for one so far advanced in years.  His remains were buried in the Neillsville Cemetery.  When Margaret died June 15, 1898, she was laid to rest by his side.
