Clara Lewis’s 90th birthday

‘quite a celebration’

Clara Lewis of Loyal was quite amazed when approximately 400 people came to an open house at the Loyal Legion Hall on Oct. 13, to celebrate her 90th birthday. People came from 12 states for the big event.

Family members attending included daughter Lois Ziegler-O’Donnell and husband Tom O’Donnell from California, daughter Dr. Loretta and husband Edward Grobe from Michigan and all six of Clara’s grandchildren as well as all eight of her great-grandchildren.  The attending grandchildren, spouses and great grandchildren included Shelly (Rev. Dr. William) Lewis and children Elijah and Taylor from Nebraska; Dean (Kathy) Ziegler from California; Laurie Horton and children Sam and Lilah from California; Bryon Ziegler and daughter Mackenzie from Washington; Kevin (Andrea) Grobe and children Madeline, Garett and Haley from Michigan; and Dr. Justin (Dr. Connie) Grobe from Iowa.  Laurie’s husband could not attend because he was out of the country on business and Bryon’s wife (Julie) could not attend because she is expecting a new baby in December.  Clara’s brother Thearn Sternitzky and wife Linnie of Arizona were also in attendance as was Clara’s 103-year-old aunt, Ann Pernsteiner of Greenwood.

Other relatives and friends came from Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio and Oklahoma, as well as from all over Wisconsin.  People mingled as they enjoyed a lovely buffet prepared and served by Manager Dan and the Legion staff.  Art Petke’s Harmony Four Dance Band entertained young and old alike as many danced while others simply enjoyed listening to the music.  Clara even danced a few waltzes, but she spent most of the evening on her feet visiting with everyone who came to the party. She didn’t want to miss the opportunity to talk with each and every one during the six-hour open house.

Clara was so happy anticipating the assembling of her family for her big event that she spent days making home-made yeast doughnuts (some with prune filling) and cookies, including rolled and cut out ones for those little guys.  Of course, she also made potato dumplings as well as noodles and had them ready to cook in chicken broth for family members as they arrived in Loyal.
