Mary Jane (McMahon) Huntizicker-Root, 1904 ca.

The Historic Homes tour of Neillsville is wonderful. I was finally able to visit Neillsville for the first time this fall and actually saw these houses, and that was quite a thrill. The beauty of this community is beyond my imagining.

May I tell you about the Huntzicker who was in the James Sturdevant House (29 Hewett) from 1889 to 1920? According to the Neillsville Republican & Press, 12/10/1891, Mary Jane (nee McMahon) Huntzicker purchased this house in 1889, the year following the death of her husband Jacob Huntzicker of Greenwood. She still had three of her five children at home.

In December of 1891 she married Homer Root and they lived in the house until 1920.  She was an energetic lady, constantly organizing meetings at 29 Hewett for everything from clothing-drives for the needy to spiritualist meetings. In 1920 they moved to the bungalow Homer Root built at 313 Hewett. Mary Jane Root died there in 1927. She and her first husband, Jacob Huntzicker were my great great grandparents.
