Wisconsin 9th Infantry was a German regiment organized in the fall of 1861. It first took part in the "Southwestern Expedition" into Kansas, Missouri, and the Indian Territory, routing two Confederate camps at Cowskin Prairie and a large Confederate Indian Camp. It fought battles at Newtonia, Cane Hill, Prairie Grove, Terre Noir, Poison Springs and Jenkins’ Ferry.
