Lumberman, Oliver Yerkes of Colby, Wisconsin, was born in May 24, 1830 in the Empire State (according to the census record below).  Some family records state he was born in Damascus, Wayne Co., PA to David Shields & Caroline (Calkins) Yerkes.  July 1857, he married Catherine, the daughter of James Wicker in Washington County, Wisconsin.  She was born at Clay's Corners, New York in 1833.  Again, some family records vary with our census record information and place her birth date for September 26, 1838 and also indicate PA rather than NY as her birth place.  The couple settled on a farm south of town and farmed there until they retired in 1903 and moved into the village of Colby.  He belonged to the I.O.O.F. and Catherine was an active member of Rebeccah's Lodge.  Oliver died in 1916 and was buried in the Colby Memorial Cemetery.  Catherine then moved to Waupaca, Wisconsin to live at the State Veteran's Home, four years later, when she was laid to rest beside her beloved husband.
