Deland, James (20 AUG 1836 - 10 APR 1915)

James Delane was born at Malone, N.Y., Aug. 20, 1836, and died at Portland, Ore., April 10, 1915. He came to Black River Falls in the early 50’s and enlisted in the 1st Wisconsin Light Art. at La Crosse in 1861. He served three years and one month in the war and then returned to Black River Falls in the fall of 1868. In 1868 he was married to Myra V. Wilson and they moved to Neillsville in the fall of 1872. Here he engaged in the blacksmith and wagon making business until Oct. 1879, when he entered the hotel and grocery business. During the years of his residence here he conducted himself in a thoroughly upright and conscientious manner and so lived that his friendship was a matter of sincere pleasure to all with whom he came in contact, and when he moved to Spokane in 1896 his going caused general regret to all. In 1912 he moved to Portland where he died. He is survived by a widow, two sons and one daughter.
