Voigtlander, Henry P. (13 JAN 1925 - 29 AUG 2012)

Henry Paul Voigtlander, 87, died on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012, at Champaign County Nursing Home in Urbana, Ill.

His visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31, at the Morgan Memorial Home in Savoy. His funeral service will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1, at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Champaign. The Rev. Tim Haworth will be officiating. Burial will take place at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Champaign.

Mr. Voigtlander was born on Jan. 13, 1925, in Curtiss, Wis., son of Henry Paul Voigtlander and Elisabeth Awe Voigtlander.

He married Betty Jane Guyer on June 26, 1954, in Madison, Wis., and she survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Carol Lynn Voigtlander and Mary Voigtlander Sommers, and her husband, Jack Sommers, all three of Tulsa, Okla.; one son, James Paul Voigtlander, and his wife, Rayla Voigtlander, Champaign; grandchildren, John, Sara, and Katie Sommers, Tulsa, Okla.; and Rachel, David, Lauren, and Christian Voigtlander, Minneapolis, Minn.; one sister, Ellen Voigtlander Syring, Marshfield, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Nancy Voigtlander Miller, and one son, David Henry Voigtlander.

Henry received his B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1951, and a Master of Science degree in genetics and animal husbandry, physiology and reproduction in 1953. He was a specialist in livestock, and earned the American Farmer degree in 1946. He also won many judging honors on the University of Wisconsin judging teams, and was the Little International Shearing Champion. After 1954, he was with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Extension Service as an Assistant Farm Advisor for Champaign County, Ill. He also was involved in the 4-H program, where he coached youth on championship winning livestock teams. He was an excellent sheep shearer and enjoyed growing up on a dairy farm.

Henry spent the middle and later years of his life as an insurance agent with Nationwide Insurance Company, as a 50 year member and Realtor with the Champaign County Association of Realtors, as a founding member of the Central Illinois Apartment Association, and as a successful manager and owner of campus rental property. He enjoyed landlord farming which included the marketing of grain from his farms.

Mr. Voigtlander was a devoted member, consistory officer, and past President of St. Peter's United Church of Christ. He was a lifetime member of the United Church of Christ denomination.

Henry's interests included going to auctions, welding metal for various projects, attending the National Apartment Association annual meetings, and supporting various Christian ministries.

Memorials may be made to St. Peter's United Church of Christ and the Champaign County 4-H Extension Education Foundation.

Morgan Memorial Home, 1304 Regency Drive West, Savoy is handling arrangements.
