Havlicek, Darla Jane (17 July 1965 - 19 April 2012)

Darla Havlicek, 46, of Eagan, MN, passed away on April 19, 2012, after living with cancer for three years.  Her positive attitude throughout her illness inspired her family, friends, colleagues and health care providers.

Darla was born July 17, 1965, in Neillsville and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1983. She earned a degree in community Health Education from UW-La Crosse.  Darla’s commitment to tobacco control is respected by public health advocates across Minnesota.  She served a director of Tobacco Control for the Midwest Division of the American Cancer Society and managed tobacco reduction programs at HealthPartners and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota.

Darla’s extensive travels took her to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Ireland, Scotland, England, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Mexico, Puerto Rico and to nearly every state in the U. S. including regular fall vacations to the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Darla’s love of music began with her playing the church organ as a child, progresses through polka music (let it be known, she could polka almost as well as her parents) and included an appreciation for the finer 1980s heavy metal bands.

Darla is survived by her parents, Don and Dorothy Havlicek of Merrillan; her brother Don (Julie); nieces Jessica, Samantha and Taylor of Stoughton; her loving friend Mark Meier; her faithful kitty Sophie; and legions of friends.

She is preceded in death by grandparents Charles and Josephine Havlicek, Irvin and Ruth Taylor; Aunt Shirley Condron; Uncle Louis Burger; and Cousins Tony Havlicek and John McNeil.

A celebration of Darla’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 4, at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church in Minneapolis. Visitation will be at the church for one hour prior to the Memorial Service. A local service at Merrillan United Methodist Church and scattering of ashes at the Outer Banks of North Carolina will occur at later dates.

Donations in Darla’s honor should be made payable to the Minnesota Medical Foundation (200 Oak Street SE, Suite 300, Minneapolis, MN 55455) with a note specifying the Adams Head & Neck Cancer Fund.
