Accident Claims Life of Ulysses Cain

The Loyal Community was stunned Monday morning to learn of the tragic death of Ulysses Cain.  He was killed about 8:30 a.m. in an accident which occurred on Highway 98, just east of Main Street.

Cain, a former city employee, has been working part-time for the City of Loyal since his retirement about five years ago.  Monday morning he was helping city employee Ray Morrison with the weekly garbage pickup.  The pair had started their pickup in the city’s northeast section and were picking up garbage along Highway 98, traveling in a westerly direction.

After completing their pickup along Highway 98, Morrison intended to back the truck in order to turn and proceed down Monroe Street.  Mr. Cain apparently fell or had gotten off the truck and the wheels passed over him.

The accident was investigated by the Clark County Sheriff’s Department and the County Coroner Robert Lulloff, who ruled the death accidental.  Death was caused by massive head injuries.

The death was Clark County’s first traffic fatality of 1981,

Loyal -- Elsie Elizabeth Cain, 90, Loyal, died Aug. 23, 2000, at the Clark County Health Care Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Loyal. Burial will follow in the Loyal City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to service time Saturday at the church.

Cuddie Funeral Home of Loyal assisted the family with the arrangements.

She was born April 16, 1910 in Lyon County, Iowa to Henry and Marie (nee Gelhaar) Langfeldt.  She worked at E-Z Kamper for several years as a painter and did sewing and alterations for many people in Clark County.

She is survived by her son, Wayne (Winnie) Cain of Leavenworth, Wash.; one daughter, Zada (Lester) Bloom of Loyal: five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; her sister, Janis (Kenneth) Vollrath of Marshfield; and several step-sisters.
