James C. & Nancy Ann (Miller) Redwine

Beaver Twp., Clark Co., Wisconsin

James was born 1 Sep 1838 in Logansport, IN, the 2nd son of Frederick (1803, VA) and Elizabeth W. (Roush) Redwine.  They married 21 Dec 1837 in Marion, IN. Frederick was a mill digger and in 1850 their family was living in Tippecanoe, IN.  His mother died when James was 15 yrs. old (4 Dec 1810-30 Jan 1853).  James married three times, first to Fatha "Lucy" Ellen Sellers in Frankfort, IN, 17 Jun 1860.  He and Lucy had a son, John Henry Elden (1 Jun 1860, Frankfort, IN).  Later that summer, James was enlisted in Co H, 86th Ind., Inf., 14 Aug 1862 by Capt. Bell for a 3 yr. term.  Pvt. Redwine’s military records indicate he was a resident of Middle Fork, IN at that time.  He stood 5'11" tall and had blue eyes, brown hair, and a light complexion.  Two months later he deserted his regiment near Crab Orchard, KY 16 Oct 1862.  The family story is that he left his unit after being wounded during a battle at "Pea Hill" [Pea Ridge?].  Following the war his daughter, Rosetta (8 Apr 1866, Frankfort, IN) was born.  In 1878 James married 16 yr. old Nancy Ann (4 May 1862) in Washington Co., WI.  A few months later their son Frederick (4 Mar 1878, WI, named for his grandfather) was born.  Nancy was the daughter of George and Elizabeth (Smith) Miller.  The Redwine’s, including James’ son 21 yr. old John Henry, Frederick and their 3 mo. old daughter Lilly (23 Mar 1880, MO), were living with Nancy’s family in Lewis, MO in 1880.  Three years later when they were living in KS, where their son William was born (24 Mar 1883).  The following year James Jr. (29 Aug 1884) was born.  James was farming in Longwood, WI at the time of the 1885 census and was resident of Greenwood when the 1895 census was taken.  His son John Henry rented a farm in Warner, Twp.  He’d married Abbie Julia, 9 Sep 1885.  She was the daughter of John Asa and Mary Ann (Olson) Scovil of Beaver Twp.  The other children of James and Nancy were: George Albert (14 Jan 1887, Clark Co, WI, m. Lizzie Griesbach), Luella (10 Mar 1889 in Clark Co., WI), Nora (29 Jun 1892), Roy (29 Oct 1895 in Cleveland, Taylor, WI), and Ruby (29 Oct 1895, a twin of Roy).   Nancy married Lewis T. Wood on Christmas Day, 1906.  The third wife of James was Sarah A. Harrison (1829, Parke Co., IN).  He died 1 Sep 1925 in Winnebago, WI, and is buried at Riverside Cemetery, Ladysmith, WI where he resided, near his son and daughter.
