George Washington & Sarah Adaline (Willets) Smith
Greenwood, Loyal & Neillsville, Clark Co., Wisconsin
signature
George
was born 25 Nov 1833 in Cato, Cayuga Co., NY, the son of 38 yr. old
John Peckham and 39 yr. old Mary Norcross (Patch) Smith. John
was a native of Stephentown, Rensselaer Co., NY and Mary was
born 3
Feb 1794 in Hamilton MA. George was a busy married, farmer in New
Holstein, WI when the Civil War broke out. At the time of his
enlistment with Co. K, 5th Wis., Cav. in Chilton 24 Feb
1864, he was 30 yrs. old. He and Selana Hammer had
married 19 May 1856, in Calumet Co. and he left her with the care of their 6
mo. old son, George Henry (1 Aug 1863, Stockbridge, WI). The
boy’s first and second birthday would pass before their eyes
would meet again. Pvt. Smith had brown eyes, light hair and
complexion and stood 6 Ft. tall. He was paid a $60 bounty and
a month’s advance pay of $13, leaving an outstanding balance
of $240 for his 3 yr. term. The next year, during the heat of
summer (22 Aug 1865), he was transferred to Co. F. He
participated in the campaigns of Baton Rouge and Mobile.
Fortunately, the close of the war brought an early end to his
service obligation. He was mustered out 28 May 1866 and
returned home. His first daughter, Mary Louisa (22 Mar 1867)
was born in Gravesville, WI and the following year, Selena
died 3 May 1868. George’s second wife was Sarah
Adaline Willets (12 Oct 1853, Beverly, Canada). They married
in Calumet Co., WI, 2 days before Christmas in 1869.
Their childern were: Viola L. (2 Dec 1871, Gravesville, WI, m.
Coral Young), Sylvester (Aug 1872), Clarissa (5 Jul 1877), Maud (1
Oct 1879), William Henry (27 Oct 1881, Neillsville, WI, m. Angeline
L. King), Betsy (7 Jul 1884), Grace (10 Feb 1887), Melissa (23 Mar
1889, Loyal, WI, m. Gus Gustafson), Leon Norman (3 Apr 1891), and
Deforest "Forrest" Franklin (4 Feb 1894, Cleveland, MN, m. Bessie
Babb). This family suffered the total destruction of their
home in Loyal, WI, 5 Jul 1874. A fire in the kitchen was
discovered too late to save anything except a feather and straw bed
and sewing machine belonging to G. P. Gwinn, who lived in the main
part of the charred house. The home was worth $1,000 but
insured for $700. Mr. Gwinn lost all of his possessions,
including $200 cash. George’s family lost all of their
household goods and clothing. The Smiths were in Mayville
Twp. for the 1880 Census and 10 May 1882 they were granted a
Homestead in sec. 6. By 1885 they were living in Eaton and
remained there for over 10 yrs. before moving to Kent, Dickey Co.,
ND where he was living when the 1910 census was taken. He
died in Fullerton, ND, on Independence Day, 1913. Sarah filed
for her Widow’s pension there that fall and after nearly 20
years of widowhood died 28 May 1933 in Sebeka, Wadena Co.,
MN. They are both thought to have been buried in Ellendale,
ND. Civil War Soldiers in the Heart of Clark Co.,

Smith, Mary (Marriage - 20 JUN 1900)
A very pretty wedding took place at noon Wednesday at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. W. Smith on the North Side (Neillsville, Clark County), at which their daughter Mary and Mr. Wm. J. Nutting were united in marriage, Rev. E. A. McKinney, of Marshfield, officiating. About seventy-five invited guests were present. The rooms were beautifully decorated with evergreens and flowers, the principal floral decoration being roses. Just at high noon, with Miss Birdie Rossman at the organ, the parties were ushered into the parlor to the strains of the wedding march. The groom was attended by his brother Dumont Nutting and Geo. J. Smith, a brother of the bride. The bride entered on the arm of her father, Miss Laura Sherman, of Cadott and Miss Lottie Calkins, of Boyd, attended as bridesmaids. The contracting couple took their place beneath a flower and ribbon decked arch of evergreen where the words were spoken which made them one. The tables were set on the shady lawn where, on the rose-decked board was spread a most bountiful banquet. Many beautiful presents were bestowed and what with the beauty of the day and the hearty congratulations and good wishes of friends, the young couple make a happy start in their matrimonial life.
The groom is the son of B. F. Nutting, of the village of Loyal, Clark County, and is a young man of high character the bride, during her short residence in Neillsville, has in a quiet way won the admiration and regard of a goodly circle of friends. They will make their home in the village of Loyal.

Smith, Melissa (Marriage - 27 MAR 1907)
A very pretty wedding took place March 27th, 1907, at 12 o’clock, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. W. Smith of Fullerton, N.D., when their daughter Miss Melissa Smith and Mr. Gust Gustafson were united in the holy bonds of matrimony, Rev. E.M. Isaac, of Ellendale, officiating. The bride was gowned in white silk and carried pale pink flowers, the groom wore the conventional black.
On account of the recent death of Mrs. Smith’s mother, the wedding was a very quiet one, only about 20 of the most intimate friends were present. A good supply of costly presents was left when the guests departed.
The bride was born and raised near Neillsville, Clark County, and is well known and loved by all. The groom is of Swedish decent and a resident of Fullerton for 5 years and is highly respected by all who knew him, he is a smart energetic young man. They will be at home one-half mile from her parents after April 9.

Your Tree shows Sarah Addlaide Willet with a date of death of 4 Jul 1913. That is the date of death of her husband, but she appears to be alive in the 1920 (Nevis, Hubbard, MN) and 1930 (Sebeka, Wadena, MN)Census reports. There is also a MN Death rec for a Sarah Addlade Smith in Wadena Co. with a date of 28 May 1933. Can you confirm when she died and if she is buried with her husband in ND? And would you know where in ND he is buried?
Thank you! Marsha

Right place, wrong details, big coincidence? Trees show Sarah's place of birth as Beverly, Canada. There is a Beverly in Alberta... do you know if that is it?
Thank you! Marsha

George Washington & Sarah Adaline (Willets) Smith
Greenwood, Loyal & Neillsville, Clark Co., Wisconsin
George was born 25 Nov 1833 in Cato, Cayuga Co., NY, the son of John Peckham & Mary Norcross (Patch) Smith. His father was born abt. 1795 in Stephentown, Rennselaer Co., NY, and his mother 3 Feb 1794 in Hamilton MA. The family moved to Wisconsin, settling for some time in Calumet Co. where George married Selana Hammer on 19 May 1856. Their son, George H., was born 1 Aug 1863 in Stockbridge.
He was a 30-year-old farmer from New Holstein, Calumet Co., WI, when he enlisted at Chilton as a Pvt. with Co. K, 4th Wis. Cav., 24 Feb 1864. His records describe him as 6 ft. tall, brown-eyed, with light hair and complexion. He was paid a bounty of $60 and a $13 one month’s advance of pay, leaving a balance of $240 outstanding. He transferred to Co. F, 22 Aug 1865. His commitment was for 3 yrs. service, but was mustered out 28 May 1866 at the close of the war. He participated in the campaigns of Baton Rouge and Mobile.
After his return to civilian life, George and Selana became the parents of Mary Louisa, b. 22 Mar 1867, Gravesville. Selana, b. 1838 in NY, died 3 May 1868 at Gravesville. George then married Sarah Adeline Willets in Calumet Co., WI, 2 days before Christmas 1869. She was born 12 Oct 1853 in Beverly, Canada. They were the parents of Viola L. (b. 2 Dec 1871, Gravesville, WI, m. Coral Young), Sylvester (b. Aug 1872), Clarissa (b. 5 Jul 1877), Maud (b. 1 Oct 1879), William Henry (b. 27 Oct 1881, Neillsville, WI, m. Angeline L. King), Betsy (b. 7 Jul 1884), Grace (b. 10 Feb 1887), Melissa (b. 23 Mar 1889, Loyal, WI, m. Gus Gustafson), Leon Norman (b. 3 Apr 1891), and Deforest "Forrest" Franklin (b. 4 Feb 1894, Cleveland, MN, m. Bessie Babb). The first mention of this family in Clark Co. is 5 Jul 1874, when they suffered the total destruction of their home in Loyal, WI. The fire began in the kitchen and was discovered too late to save anything except a feather and straw bed and sewing machine belonging to G. P. Gwinn, who lived in the main part of the house. The house was worth $1,000 but insured for $700. Mr. Gwinn lost all of his possessions, including $200 cash. The Smiths lost all of their household goods and clothing.
George is then recorded in the 1880 Census of Mayville Twp., where he acquired a Homestead in sec. 6, 10 May 1882. When the 1885 WI Special Veterans Census is taken, he is living in Eaton Twp., where he remained for over 10 yrs. The 1910 Census finds him in Kent, Dickey Co., ND, and he died in Fullerton, ND, 4 July 1913. Sarah filed for her Widow’s pension in Sept 1913 from ND, and died 28 May 1933 in Sebeka, Wadena Co., MN. They are both thought to have been buried in Ellendale, ND.
