Schultz, Raymond E. (1919 - 1980)


Dr. Raymond E. Schultz, a former teacher and coach at Loyal High School, Clark County, was dilled in an auto accident April 1, 1980 in Tucson, Ariz., where he made his home. He was born in Saco, Mont. on Dec. 13, 1919, the son of John and Helen Schultz of Hinsdale, Mont.


He attended one-room country schools in his youth and graduated from Hinsdale High School in 1938. Schultz attended Western Montana College at Dillon, where he received his Bachelor of Education degree in 1942.


After a stint in the Army in World War II, he entered the graduate program at the University of Wisconsin, receiving his Masters Degree in 1946 and his doctorate in 1951.


He was a teacher and coach at Loyal High School in Loyal, Wis. before his entrance into college teaching. He was on the faculty of the University of Illinois, 1950-53 Florida State University, 1953-72 Washington State University, 1972-75 and at the time of his death was a professor of education in the University of Arizona in Tucson.


Schultz was prominent in education in the United States, primarily in the field of community college administration. He spent two years as Director of the International office for American Association of Community and Junior Colleges and was a consultant in his field for the past 10 years.


His work in the advancement of the community college concept brought him wide acclaim throughout the academic community.


Survivors include his wife, Margaret, at the home a son, Paul Schultz of Tucson, who was critically injured in the accident that took Dr. Schultz s life two daughters, Diane Center and Debbie Schultz, both of Seattle, Wash. two granddaughters, Heather and Sarah Schultz of Tucson his mother, Helen Schultz of Great Falls, Mont. one brother, Albert Schultz of LaJunta, Colo. three sisters, Harriet Anderson of Great Falls, Mont., Bette Cox of Deer Park, Wash., and Jeanette Squires of Pasco, Wash. one aunt and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.


Memorial services were held April 7 at the University of Arizona. Participants in the tribute to Dr. Schultz were personal friends and associate in the field of education.


Interment was in Tucson.
