Etta, Elmer James (1888 - 1956)


GREENWOOD, CLARK COUNTY--Elmer James Etta, 67, brother of Mrs. Harold Stabnow of Greenwood, died at the Grand Army Home at King Thursday night, Jan. 5, 1956 of a lingering illness which began in 1949 after he suffered a stroke. He had been at King for the past seven months.


Funeral services will be observed at 9 o'clock Monday morning at St. Mary's Catholic Church here, with the Rev. Augustine Svete, O.F.M. of Willard officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Legion posts of Greenwood and Loyal, with members of the latter post serving as pallbearers.


The body now lies in state at the Stabnow Funeral Home here, where a rosary service will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday.


Mr. Etta, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Henry Etta, was born April 23, 1888, at Loyal, where he received his elementary and high school education. He later operated a flour and feed store there in partnership with his father and brother, Oscar. In 1932 he began his own business at Washburn, retiring in 1949, when he became ill.


Mr. Etta was active in band work and during World War I served as a musician with headquarters company, 32nd division. He was a former city treasurer of Loyal and past commander of that city's Legion post.


His marriage to the former Esther M. LeGault, who survives him, took place Aug. 27, 1920, at St. Paul. She had been living at King during his hospitalization there.


Other survivors are two children, Mrs. George (Valerie) Humke and Robert Etta, both of Sterling, Ill. one brother, Oscar, Eau Claire and four sisters, Mrs. Esther Stabnow, Greenwood, Mrs. Fred (Mabel) Tolleth, Wisconsin Dells, Mrs. Perry (Maude) Volk, Loyal, and Mrs. Carl (Florence Keiner, Eau Claire.
