PVT. JOHNSON RITES SLATED WEDNESDAY
GREENWOOD SOLDIER WAS KILLED IN ACTION ON GERMAN FRONT


Greenwood--Military burial rites will be conducted at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Zion Reformed Church for Pvt. George Johnson, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. N. Henry Johnson, who was killed in action March 31, 1945, in Aachen, Germany.


The Rev. Benjamin Stucki, superintendent of the Indian School, Neillsville, will officiate at the services, and military rites will be conducted by the Wallis-Hinker Legion Post, No. 238. The Ladies Auxiliary will attend the funeral en masse.


The casket will be at the Stabnow Funeral Home from Tuesday morning until Wednesday noon. Interment will be made in the Greenwood Cemetery.


Pvt. Johnson was born July 22, 1926 in the Town of Mead, Clark County, 9 miles northwest of Greenwood. He attended Greenwood High School for two years before enlisting in the Army Aug. 14, 1944. He received basic training at Camp J. T. Robinson, and embarked for overseas Jan. 1, 1945.


Pallbearers will be Harry Wallis, Michael Podobonik, Kenneth Speich, Norbert Dill, Alvin Klinke, and Harold Lyon. The color guard will include Raymond Vessel, Victor Perman, Frank Klinke and Cletus Susa.


The firing squad will be composed of Laverne Brown, Robert Carl, Louis Edwards, Lawrence Jackson, Earl Godee, Leo Wehrman, John D. Speich, Edward Gosse, and William Kavanaugh.


He is survived by his father and one sister, Beatrice. His mother preceded him in death in 1930, and a brother, Pfc. Mathew Johnson, was killed in action Oct., 1943, and is buried in England.
