HIS RECORD CLOSED.

"Honest as the day is long," "A man who loves his neighbor," "A true Christian in every sense of the word," are some of the terms it has been our pleasure during the past four years that we have lived in Greenwood, to hear regarding John Syth, whose death, occurring Sept. 30, from bloody flux and catarrh of the stomach, we mentioned last week. Higher tribute at the close of a man's life is not forthcoming to all who have lived sixty-five years. Such a life record should inspire others to noble purposes and noble living.

Mr. Syth was born in Middlesex county, Canada, Sept. 22, 1836, his parents coming there from England. On July 5, 1860, he was married to Isabelle Kennedy, who with three sons and their families, are left to hold in remembrance a true husband and a patient loving father. Five children, all sons, were born to this couple, two of them dying early. Those surviving are: John W., Robert H., William A., all married. The last named, with his wife, has charge of the home farm, residing in the parental home. Besides these, deceased leaves two brothers, Thomas and James, who live south of town.

Mr. Syth settled on the home farm of 240 acres when he first came from Canada, in 1871. Then it was a solid forest now it is a well improved farm with plenty of woods left, however, to keep the boys busy for some years to come.

For many years deceased has held town offices, serving one year as chairman of the board of supervisors, another as justice of the peace, and for twelve consecutive years past has served as town treasurer. He was a faithful member of the M. E. church, serving at different times as steward. He was also a member of Hercules Lodge No. 181, I.O.O.F.

The funeral, which occurred from the M.E. church last Wednesday afternoon was one of the largest attended for years, over sixty teams forming the procession. Many friends from neighboring towns were among those to pay their respects to the memory of one whom everybody respected and loved. The services were conducted by Pastor Kloster, Revs. G. C. Andrews and W. T. Hendren. At the grave the Odd Fellow burial service was used. The pall bearers, chosen from the Odd Fellows, were: Elias Peterson, Hezekiah Hubbell, Paul Rossman, E. Romaine, Frank Zetsche and Anton Larson. Interment took place in the Greenwood cemetery.

***********************************************************

A husband devoted and lobing:
A father gentle and kind,
Has gone from this world of sorrow,
A better world to find.
Loved ones he has left behind him
To mourn his sudden death,
But some day ere long they will follow
To dwell with the Master forever,
No more on this earth to roam.
Many years he has trusted in Jesus,
Death to him was no object of dread.
