Vine, Fred Sr. #2 (10 NOV 1844 - 10 FEB 1917)

All that was mortal of Fred Vine Sr., one of Clark County’s most respected pioneers, was born from Tuesday’s early morning train at Neillsville and conveyed to his hold home in Grant where it reposed in state until the funeral at the Prince of Peace Church on the Ridge that afternoon.  Deceased was an old and well-known member of the Masonic order and the funeral was conducted under Masonic auspices, with Rev. Coleman of the Neillsville M.E. Church, assisting.  The pallbearers were six of his grandsons, namely Lester, Lyle and Walter Carter, Ernest and William Vine, and Tom Huckstead.  Interment was made in the town of Grant Cemetery.

Fred Vine Sr. was born in Buffalo, N.Y., son of John and Mary Vine, on Nov. 10th, 1844.  He was there married to Miss Mary Buss in 1864 and soon after in that same year, they came to Clark County, Wis., and settled upon a farm here in the town of Grant.  This same farm is now owned and divided among their sons, Fred, Frank and George.  Deceased, during his residence here in Grant served his town as chairman for many years and as clerk for a like period.  He was at one time, too, postmaster in the Pleasant Ridge office, ever faithful to the best interests of those he served.  Through all the hardships of pioneer years he raised a large family and thoroughly educated them so they might become the good citizens they are today, and making their own way in life.

In 1898 he moved to Tower City, Minn., where he acted as superintendent farmer of the Indian reservation, thence to Flambeau where he took a like position and was actively engaged in this work until about ten years ago when he and his good wife moved to Crandon where his son Arthur resides, and where they remained until death claimed him early last Saturday morning.  Mr. Vine died of enlargement of the spleen.  He was a patient sufferer from this malady for 20 years.  Mrs. Vine and seven children, namely Arthur and Mrs. Fred Major of Crandon, Mrs. Henry Carter, Fred, Frank, George and Mrs. Arlo Huckstead, all of Grant, with 21 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson, survive him.
