Szerlong, Michael (24 APR 1894 - 18 APR 1960)

 

Michael Peter Szerlong, 65, Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.) barber for over forty years, was born at Thorp on April 24, 1894.  He was brought up on the farm of his parents northeast of Thorp and attended the local schools.  Previous to World War I he took up the barber trade which he continued after serving in the army, in the 33rd Division.  He barbered in Chicago, Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls and Owen for a period of time, and had been back in Thorp for about twenty years.  He was never married.

 

Mr. Szerlong was a charter member of Cecil Tormey Post No. 118 of the American Legion of Thorp.  He died of Chronic Myocarditis at the Stanley Memorial Hospital at Stanley on April 18, 1960, where he had been taken the day before.

 

He is survived by two brothers, Adam Szerlong of Thorp and John Szerlong of Norwich, Conn., and two sisters, Agnes, Mrs. Leo Persak of West Allis, Wis., and Mrs. Ignatz Przybylski of Thorp.

 

Last rites were held at St. Hedwig’s Chapel in Thorp city at ten o’clock Thursday, April 21st, with the deceased’s nephew Father Francis Przybylski as celebrant of the Mass.  He was laid to rest in the parish new cemetery.  Pallbearers were Gordon Wolf, Wm. Nourse, Tom Hedler, Ray Giwojna, Leon Pawlak and Henry Cieslik.

 

Military honors were conferred by members of the Thorp American Legion Post, the service being read by Chaplain Harry Badzinski, a salute by the firing squad and the sounding of taps.

 

Relatives and friends here to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Leo Persak, West Allis, Wis., Leon Szerlong, Libertyville, Ill., Casey Szerlong, Chicago, Mrs. Joe Jedrychowski and Joe Berwyn and Mrs. And Mrs. Ed Tomkowiak and sons, Waukegan, Ill., Robert Przybylski, Collegeville, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Persak, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Persak and Mrs. Jim Ross, Milwaukee, Mrs. B.R. Balsis and Mrs. Charles Klimka, Chicago, and Mr. and Mrs. Mickey Crotzen, Rock Dam.
