Krueger, Louis (20 SEP 1890 - 29 JUL 1963)

Louis Krueger, 72, the last of four Krueger brothers, who along with their mother, were involved in a World War I incident that caused the established death of one and the death of a Withee depot agent, when they refused to be drafted for military duty because of religious reasons, was killed instantly earl Monday morning when he was thrown from a vehicle in which he was a passenger and then run over.

Krueger, like his brothers, was unmarried.

And, as ironic as it may seem, he lost his life in an automobile accident.  It’s ironic because he never drove an automobile and rarely did he ride in one.

Sunday he had gone to visit at the Due home, rural Stanley, and was being returned home early Monday forenoon by Mrs. Vivian Duce when the accident occurred.

County officials say the Duce car failed to stop at a rural intersection at Mattes Livestock Pavilion, southeast of Thorp, and was struck by a car driven by James Votava of Greenwood.  Krueger was thrown from the car by the impact and then run over.  Death was instant.

Mrs. Duce is hospitalized at Victory Memorial Hospital at Stanley, being treated for cuts, bruises and shock.  Votava’s injuries were reported as slight.

Final rites for Mr. Krueger were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock from the Hoeper and Kraut Funeral Home.  Rev. Ralph Claybaugh of the First Congregational Church presided, with burial being made at Riverside Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jens Smith, Thorvald Ammentorp, Arno and Carl Vater, Chris Christophersen and Karl Jensen.

Krueger, who was a pioneer resident of this community, spent his lifetime engaged in farming.  He never married and at the time of his death had no immediate survivors.
