Newton, Samuel Robert (20 July 1883 - 29 January 1964)

Samuel Newton, 80, died January 29 in the Community Hospital at Black River Falls; where he had been a patient about a week.  He was born to John and Olivia Newton, July 20, 1883, at Paines Mill, near Merrillan, where his father was an employee of the Paine Lumber Company.  His boyhood was spent there and in Merrillan, where he received his education and was a graduate of the Merrillan High School.

He had planned to teach for a while and had started a course of study to become a lawyer.  Owing to the death of his mother and brother, Hiram, plans were changed and he joined his father in farming in southwestern Clark County, about two and one-half miles from the village of Humbird.  After the death of his father in 1919, he continued on the farm until April 1945, when he and his wife and family moved into the village.  He was an insurance agent for nearly 30 years, and well known in Jackson County.  He was a past master of the Masonic Lodge, a past patron of the Eastern Star, a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge for many years, and a member of the Methodist Church. 

Surviving are his wife, Maude, a daughter, Mrs. Thane (Winifred) Joos, Alma Center; a step-daughter, Mrs. Archie (Helene) Nelson, Eau Claire; two stepsons, Hilliard Russell of Minneapolis and Hallan Russell of Sparta; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Masonic and Easter Star services were held Friday evening at 8 p.m. in  the Jensen Funeral Home at Hixton for relatives and friends.

Services were held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the Methodist Church at Humbird, Rev. Ralph Walker officiating. Burial was made in Mentor Cemetery, Humbird. The song service was given by Harold Losey of Fairchild with Mrs. Losey as accompanist.

Pallbearers were Nordahl Fristad, Henry Laffe, Alton Yule, Arthur Papke, Archie Kirby and Raymond Stuve.
