Hughes, Bette Jane (Marriage - 17 August 1963)
Zion Lutheran Church in Granton was the scene Saturday evening of a candlelight nuptial service which united in marriage Miss Bette Jane Hughes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Hughes of Rt. 2 Granton, and John R. Scheffer of Madison, son of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Scheffer of Minot, N. D. The double ring ceremony was performed by the Rev. E. T. Keller of Pittsville, before an altar adorned with baskets of peach and white gladioli.
Mr. Hughes gave his daughter in marriage. She wore a floor-length peau de soie gown, the bodice of which was fashioned with an Italian neckline. A bustle accented the full skirt. A pearl-trimmed headpiece held her bouffant veil. She carried a bouquet of two dozen long-stemmed Talisman roses.
Mrs. William Wagner was matron of honor for her twin sister. Bridesmaids were Miss Mary Hughes and Miss Suelen Gay.
Nelson Crowell of Chicago was bestman. Groomsmen were Harold Aleshire of Minot, N. D., and Roger Binkley of Madison.
Miss Carol West, a cousin of the bride, sang "The Lord’s Prayer."
A reception for 175 guests was held at the Hughes farm home.
The bride is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin school of Nursing and is employed in the Wisconsin Diagnostic Center in Madison. Mr. Scheffer is a graduate of the University of Chicago and the University of Wisconsin. He is studying for a doctor’s degree in chemistry at Madison.
Mr. and Mrs. Scheffer are on a camping trip to the east coast and on their return will reside at 15 R. Gorham, Madison.
