Burke, John (1 SEP 1890 - 9 JAN 1958)

 

John Burke, age 67, passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls, at 9:10 Thursday evening.  He was a resident of Boyd since 1926.  He died following a stroke last Saturday morning.

 

He was born at Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.) Sept. 1st, 1890, and lived there until he moved to Boyd in 1926.  He was married to Anna Velcheck at Thorp on Oct. 15, 1912 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Thorp.

 

He had been a distributor for the Standard Oil Co. at Boyd for two years, after which he was employed by the Boyd Oil and Garage Co., until 1942, when he accepted the position of Village Marshall and street and water superintendent, a position he held until his retirement in February 1957.

 

He is survived by five children, Mrs. Frank (Wilhelmine) McGivern of Marshfield; Mrs. Keith (Ethel) Calkins of Dallas, Texas; Mrs. Gerald (Patricia) Else of Eau Claire; two sons, George of Boyd and Jack of Owen; five sisters, Mrs. Margaret Piper, Mrs. Wm. F. Nolechek, Mrs. Bernice Nolan, Miss Dorothy Burk, all of Thorp, and Mrs. Robert Piper of Milwaukee.  Also surviving are 18 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.  His wife preceded him in death on May 28, 1957.

 

Funeral services were held in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Boyd, Tuesday morning at 9:30 o’clock with Rev. Charles Donahue officiating.  Interment was in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Boyd.
