Sutherland, Lillie Louisa (9 May 1895 - 6 May 1910)

Fatally Burned - This office is in receipt of a communication from Walter Sutherland of Gig Harbor, Wash., formerly of this place which gives an account of the untimely death of their daughter Lillie, 15 years old, who was fatally burned while preparing dinner Thursday, May 5th.

The sad accident happened while Lillie was putting chips into the cook stove, shaking them from her apron into the fire, her apron was ignited and the flames rapidly spread to all parts of her clothing.  Losing her presence of mind she ran to her mother for assistance and then ran frantically into the yard; thus augmenting the flames which were by that time completely enveloping her.  Her father hearing the cries rushed from his work in a nearby field and succeeded in extinguishing the fire, but she had inhaled flame and smoke which was directly the cause of her death which followed at 3 o’clock the next morning.

She was of a bright, cheerful disposition and had attained the age where she was a great aid to her parents, and this aid she gave with a willingness that would do credit to any girl of her age or much her senior. She not only attended to nearly all of the household duties, but also had the care of her mother who was quite ill at the time of the accident, having been confined to her bed for more than a week, and on the morning of the fatal accident had left her bed for a short time.

Miss Lillie Louisa Sutherland was born in Granton, Wisconsin, May 9th, 1895 and died Friday, May 6, 1910, being at the time of her death 14 years, 11 months and 27 days of age.  Besides her parents she is survived by 3 brothers; Noble, Free and Raymond, and 2 sisters, Nellie and Jennie.  Funeral services were held at the Rosedale Church at Rosedale, Wash., on Sunday, May 8th at 2 p.m. and the remains were then laid to rest in Rosedale Cemetery in the family lot.
