Sunny California Letter (21 January 1910)

Ocean Park, Cal., Jan. 14, ‘10

Dear Editor: -- As I promised my friends a letter when I got settled I take this plan of writing to all at once, if you will allow me space in your valuable paper.

We had a very pleasant trip over the Great Northern to Tacoma.  There we visited Seth and Clara Martin, formerly of Chili, for ten days and had a splendid visit with the jolly people.  Then we took the N. P. for Portland and the S. P. for Los Angeles.  Will say right here we did not find the accommodations on the S. P. that we did on the G. N. R. R.

Our son Frank, whom we had not seen for 5 years met us at Los Angeles. There were lots of people, but we could not see anyone else for a while.  We then took an electric train for Ocean Park where we have lodging for the winter.  Ocean Park is a nice little city of 6,000, located on the beach, a very nice summer as well as winter resort, if you can call it winter.  Talk about climate!  60 above in the shade most every day and 48 above has been the coldest.  Have had a couple of rains but no fog since we came.  People go bathing in the ocean most every day of the year and some stay in for 2 hours or more digging clams.  I have been in bathing twice.  How often do you people go in the O’Neill Creek?

Yesterday was the greatest day of my life except one that was when I was born.  We went to the Aviation field yesterday to witness the greatest air ship contest in the world.  The field is located near Long Beach and 40,000 people witnessed the highest altitude and fastest speed ever attained by any air ship.  Paulhan of France won in flight for altitude, height 5,000 feet, and Glen Curtiss of American won in speed contest, the course is 1.61 miles,  time 2.131/8.  This contest will last for ten days and the prizes range from $3,000 down.  There are three balloons, 2 dirigible air ships - they are shaped like a shuttle, 3 monoplanes, and 4 bi-planes entered for the races.

If this does not find the waste basket I may write again.  Will close wishing my friends a Happy New Year.  Norman Kidd
