Cole, James L. (20 OCT 1861 - 12 MAY 1947)

Funeral services for James Cole, who died quite suddenly at his home in this village Monday of last week, were held at the town hall at 2:00 o’clock last Thursday afternoon, and were attended by many friends.  The numerous beautiful flowers expressed the esteem with which Mr. Cole was held in this community.

The burial sermon was by Rev. Edward J. Sachtjen, from the text "If a man die, shall he live again," Job 14:14.  Mrs. W.E. Waters and Mrs. Will Theiler sang, "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Rock of Ages," with Mrs. Walter Smith accompanist.  Pallbearers were Angus Flood, Archie Fradenburg, Peter Fradenburg, Ervin Kelsh, Geo. Mueller, and W.E. Waters.  Burial was in the family lot in Mentor Cemetery.

Relatives from away attending the last rites were Mr. and Mrs. Willard Cole of Bloomer; Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Vanderberg, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Berger, Augusta; Mrs. Charles Glassberner, Mrs. Ray Cranblit, Mrs. Rudolph Curry, Mrs. Myrtle Berger, Eau Claire.

James Leonard Cole was born at Oak Grove, Dodge Co., Wis., October 20, 1861, and died at his home in Humbird (Clark Co., Wis.), May 12, 1947, at the age of 85 years, 6 months and 22 days.

When nine years of age he came to Clark County with his parents, residing at Loyal and Christie, coming to Humbird sixty-one years ago.  In his younger years he was employed in the lumber woods and on the railroad, but the greater number of the years of his long life were spent in farming, a pursuit in which he was most successful.

On Sept. 7, 1894, he was united in marriage with Clara Shefflbine of Augusta, and to this union were born two sons, John and Cassius.  Soon after their marriage, the home was established on the farm north of the village.  In 1920 the operating of the farm was turned over to their son John, and Mr. and Mrs. Cole and Cassius moved into the village.  Mrs. Cole passed away Thanksgiving time in 1938, and since that time Mr. Cole and son Cassius have made their home part of the time on the farm and part in the village.  About a year ago he purchased a residence in the village and was remodeling it into a comfortable home for his son and himself when the final summons came.

Mourning his death are his two sons, John and Cassius, one niece, Mrs. Chester Bailey, and several cousins, besides a host of friends.
