Gulczinski, Florian (7 Apr 1917 – 14 Dec 1975)

Florian Gulczinski, Route 1, Greenwood, Town of Eaton, died at 10 a.m. Sunday at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield, where he had been admitted earlier in the day. He was 58 years old.

Rites were at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greenwood. Officiating was the Rev. Robert Houston, pastor. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Born April 7, 1917 at Warsaw, North Dakota, Mr. Gulczinski spent most of his earlier years around the Thorp area. In 1945 he moved to a farm southeast of Greenwood in the Town of Eaton.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Mr. Gulczinski married the former Angeline Briski on June 17, 1944 at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Thorp. She survives.

Other survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Orville (Judy) Loberg, Neillsville, and Mrs. Janet Keeler and Miss Rita Gulczinski, both of Minneapolis; a son, Rodney, at home; three brothers, Joseph, Frank and Steven, all of Minneapolis; four sisters, Mrs. James (Frances) Varans, Mrs. Walter (Verna) Lazarz and Mrs. Stanley (Ann) Swidrkowski, all of Minneapolis, and Mrs. John (Alice) Badzinski, Thorp, and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Gulczinski.

Airman David A. Plechacek, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tony A. Plechacek, Route 1, Thorp, Wisconsin, has been selected for technical training in the U.S. Air Force aircraft equipment maintenance field at Chanute AFB, Illinois.

The airman recently completed basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas, where he studied the Air Force Mission, organization and customs, and received special instruction in human relations.

Airman Plechacek is a 1975 graduate of Thorp High School.

Sylvia Oberle, presently a teacher of language arts at the Thorp Jr. High School, received a Master’s degree in teaching with a language arts emphasis at the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire.

Mary Jo Keating, Thorp, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Keating, 101 W. Birch Street, Thorp, graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and plans to enter graduate school at UW-Madison. She was the president of the Association of Student Social Workers, an honor student in the sociology department, and a Cum Laud graduate.

Jane Ebben Kramer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Ebben, 504 North Washington Street, Thorp graduated recently from the University of Eau Claire, Wisconsin with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business education. She was the secretary-treasurer of the married Students Organization and is a member of Phi Beta Lambda. She plans to attended graduate school at UW-EC, and has received an assistantship in the Department of Office Administration.

Mary Lawrence, Neillsville, spoke about her new job as supplemental Security Income outreach worker to staff and participants in the Clark County Nutrition project December 19, 1975 at the Methodist Church in Neillsville.

“My job is to seek out the elderly and disable people who may not have heard about the SSI program, and help them see if it would benefit them.” Mrs. Lawrence said.

The program provides funds to the elderly and handicapped to bring them up to a basic month monthly income - $228 a month for 1, and $342 a month for a couple. They most have limited assets, less than $1,500 in the bank, a home worth no more than #25,00, and meet other qualifications.

Mrs. Lawrence has received training and can visit the home to help a person determine whether he might be eligible. Then, she can assist a person to get to Wausau to make final application at the Social Security office.

Ernest Koltis, a Thorp native, has been named Merchandising Manager of a new 175,000 square foot JC Penney Department store in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The store will open in February 1976.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Koltis, 417 East Stanley Street, Thorp.

Koltis joined JC Penney in 1971 at La Crosse, Wisconsin, and was promoted as department manager and merchandising manager there. In his current assignment at Fort Wayne, he will be responsible for several home furnishings departments.

Koltis and his wife Lynda and two daughters will make their home in Fort Wayne at 3723 West Washington Center Road.

The American Association of Retired Person was highly honored to have Thorp’s Mayor Frank Wadzinski as guest at their Christmas luncheon on December 15, 1975, at Morgan Plaza. After the luncheon Mayor Wadzinski presented the Thorp Area Chapter of AARP with their charter. This was the acknowledgement of 1975 achievements for the Thorp Group. No greater Christmas gift could be received by anyone. We thank you Mr. Wadzinski.
