Author Speaks of WWI at Neillsville Library (Foster - 2023)

By June Thompson

Any veteran who has served their country, especially during wartime, has experiences civilians may never entirely understand. Some of those experiences are documented in letters and books, a testament to serving in the military.

Author and Neillsville native, Navy Captain (retired) Gary H. Foster visited the Neillsville Public Library Nov. 8. Foster served his country, as did his father and grandfather before him.

Yet, Gary Foster did something many veterans did not do: He wrote a book about his grandfather Leo Foster’s experience serving during World War I. The historical biographical book, “Notes from the Trenches: A Musician’s Journey through World War I” is based on the letters and wartime memorabilia found in Leo Foster footlocker. Some of those items included a 1918 newspaper, gas mask, pistol and letters written to his family.

“Leo’s letters couldn’t disclose certain details,” said Gary Foster. “They were read by officers first before being sent.”

Gary Foster read part of Leo Foster’s letter dated April 4, 1918.

“‘We don’t know what snow looks like in this country,’” Gary Foster read, “‘but it’s sure raining... we’ll win the war alright.’

“My grandfather enlisted in the National Guard in 1917. He was a bugler and a runner [foot messenger] in the war. He delivered messages, but after he was wounded, he went back to his unit. [Leo] served in the 64th Infantry Brigade in France.

“My grandfather was wounded three times. He was marked as dead, but he was taken off the battlefield and taken to a hospital.”

Years later, someone found Leo Foster’s dog tags in France. Gary Foster was fortunate to meet the man who located the dog tags with a metal detector.

“World War I was considered ‘The War to End All Wars: The Great War,’” said Gary Foster.

He explained the weapons of war: poison gas, machine guns, flame throwers airplanes and zeppelins were used during the war.

Gary Foster started writing his book in 2013 after he received his grandfather’s footlocker. It took him four years to publish nearly 300 pages of the nonfiction, historical biography with photos.

“It took over a year to transfer Leo Foster’s letters to [a] Word document,” said Gary Foster. “The letters were dated from Waco, TX when Leo was in training in 1917.”

Many of the letters were written to his family.

“Leo’s parents were German immigrants,” said Gary Foster. “My grandfather could speak German. His wife was Dr. Martha Foster. She started an optometrist business in Neillsville in 1923.”

Finding a publisher to put a historical book together seemed daunting. However, Gary Foster selected Outskirts Press, who provided an editor who worked with Gary Foster to organize and include the photos. The book was published December 2017.

Neillsville—Green Lantern Changes Hands After Two Decades (2023)

After 21 years, three months and 14 days, Mary and Marlin Mashin turned over the keys of The Green Lantern in Neillsville to new owners after having had it up for sale for over eight years. Nancy Curtin/Clark County Press

By Nancy Curtin

“We’re only doing this for 10 years,” Marlin and Mary Mashin said.

Those were famous last words from the Mashins as they opened the doors to the Green Lantern tavern in Neillsville July 1, 2002, as its fourth tavern owners.

It has been a tavern for the past 90 years, with William Dahnert, Forest and Angie Larsen, and Duane and Rose Peterson as previous owners. Prior to being a tavern, Dahnert ran it as an auto garage.
Based on what a local historian has found, it is uncertain when Dahnert converted the garage.

Records show he began selling alcohol after prohibition ended in 1933.

While the Mashins were clearing out their belongings, old receipts from the garage were found. One slip showed 10 gallons of gas selling for only $2.40. Many of these pieces of history have been donated to the Historical Society.

Prior to buying the bar, Mary Mashin was a bartender for Duane “Pete” Peterson.

“I walked in one day and saw the ‘for sale’ sign in the window,” Mary Mashin said.

“We really didn’t know if it was something we wanted to get into or not,” Marlin Mashin said, “but Mary didn’t want to lose her job.”

“We opened the bar with the intent of running it for 10 years and then selling [it],” said Mary Mashin.

“We have had so many great employees over the years and were happy to have our daughter, Michelle, and son, Christopher, work for us as well,” Mary Mashin said. “When Michelle was 16, she had a study hall and lunch period back-to-back; so, she would help with the lunch crowd at the bar.”

The tavern hosted many parties: birthday, retirement and even some themed parties, such as Hawaiian night, That 70s Night, Cowboy Up Night and Guitar Hero Night and Halloween parties.

“We’ve hosted many pool and dart tournaments and we’ve sponsored countless pool, dart, bowling and trap teams,” Mary Mashin said. “Marlin and I also participated in the pool and dart leagues we sponsored.

“I’m most proud of the Breast Cancer Pool Tournament we had in November 2014. We leased a pink pool table from Stansfield and the tournament raised over $600, which Stansfield matched.

“I cannot imagine how many burgers have gone through the bar. I’m not sure which owner started cooking them, but they have been a hit ever since. We use fresh hamburger and homemade buns from the local IGA and season with black pepper.”

“I think [Duane Peterson] is the one who really built the burger business,” Marlin Mashin said. “The feed mill was still there, and the farmers would come in at dinner time while waiting for their feed [order] to get done at the mill.”

Not much has changed over the years. It still has the old back bar and liquor cabinet, and the layout pretty much remained the same. The Mashins updated the kitchen with new cupboards and venting system, and they added central air.

“We have went through four sets of barstools, replaced the deep fryer three times and the griddle once,” Mary Mashin said. “We also updated the ceiling a few years ago.”

The next chapter for the Mashins is still undecided at the moment. Marlin Mashin will continue working at Cummins until he retires in May 2024. Mary Mashin will continue to recover after having surgery a few months ago.

“Once I finish healing, I may get a part time job,” Mary Mashin said.

There are no set plans for travel in the immediate future.

“Marlin likes to travel for hunting and fishing,” Mary Mashin said. “I’d rather travel to the beach.”

“Someday, I’d like to get in a vehicle and go, and not worry about where you go and care where you end up,” Marlin Mashin said.

“Imagine the memories made within those walls,” Mary Mashin said. “We have met so many wonderful people from near and far. We have been part of our customers’ lives and watched their kids grow up. Some of those kids are now old enough to drink in the bar.

“We have been part of births, graduations and weddings. And we have seen the passing of some wonderful people.”

After hosting a customer appreciation party on Oct. 14, the Mashins locked the doors and turned off the lights for the very last time, after 21 years, three months and 14 days.

The Marlins are appreciative to all who supported the Green Lantern over the years and grateful to have been a part of its history.

Simplicity Credit Union Opens Doors at New Location (2023)

Simplicity Credit Union’s (Simplicity) newest Neillsville building is now open to the public as of Oct. 26. Planning for the new location began in 2022 with a groundbreaking in March of 2023. Simplicity has been serving members in the Neillsville area since 2018, making this renovation a huge step toward better serving its members in that area.

“The opening of the branch in Neillsville marks an exciting time for our organization,” Nick Faber said, Simplicity CEO. “We are appreciative of how welcoming Neillsville and the surrounding communities have been and we look forward to building on the partnerships we already have and more for many great years ahead.”

Simplicity’s new Neillsville office, located at 335 W. Division St., Neillsville, features a larger lobby for staff and members, a drive-thru, and a Personal Teller Machine (PTN) available 24 hours a day. The PTM functions as an ATM for non-members and full-service for members with a Simplicity debit card. This means members can deposit checks and cash, make withdrawals, transfer funds between accounts and much more.

“We couldn’t be more excited for our new building,” said Lori Buffington, Neillsville branch manager. “Of course, we will miss our old building, but being able to provide for our members in a newer, larger space will only improve our service efforts.”

A grand opening is scheduled for spring 2024.

Young Family Carries on Old Tradition (A&W - 2023)

To celebrate the re-opening, new owners Jason and Candace offered $1 coney dogs during this week and $2 sundaes on Nov. 12. The Dulls took over as owners Sept.1.

The A&W restaurant, which has been a staple in the Neillsville community since the early 1950s, recently experienced a change in ownership. As of Sept. 1, Jason and Candace Dull of Greenwood took over the Neillsville location with hopes of carrying on the A&W traditions for many years to come.

The Dulls moved from Michigan to the Wisconsin countryside three years ago in search of old-fashioned country values. Jason comes from a background of being an x-ray technician while Candace has been a stay-at-home mom.

Their neighbors in Greenwood brought them calves, pigs, chickens, ducks and sheep for them to raise and teach them just how hard it is to raise farm animals. The farm produces food for their family of 10.

“Two words come to mind with homesteading: humiliation and humility,” Jason Dull said. “Rewinding back to when I was seven years old, I had a T-ball coach, Mr. Cox. Now, I wasn’t very good at T-ball. In fact, I always ran to third base instead of first.

“But win or lose, Mr. Cox would treat the whole team to ice cream after every game. We had the best time. That mentorship experience made a lasting impression on me.

“Once I discovered there as an ice cream restaurant for sale in Neillsville, I jumped on it. We’re in business to put smiles on face and a root beer or ice cream cone in people’s hand.”

After learning about this opportunity in May, Jason and Candace Dull took the steps necessary to take ownership, which included learning the basics and the menu from the previous owners, Jerry and Veronica Becker.

“[The Beckers] did everything they could to help us, which was a blessing,” Candace Dull said. “Jerry has been very accommodating.”

The Dulls each traveled to the corporate office in Kentucky for two weeks of training and completed other certifications necessary.

“I’m delighted with Jason’s decision and glad to support him and see what the future holds,” Candace Dull said.

The Dulls also look forward to having their children work alongside them in the business.

During the week of Nov. 6, the Dulls celebrated a ribbon cutting and grand re-opening to honor their new adventure.

“Country living is providing the great neighbors that we hoped for,” Jason Dull said. “And I am giving back by continuing the A&W tradition of providing root beer and ice cream in Clark County.”

Ronald Marti Hansen was born on May 14, 1964, to Dawn (Hawley-Schlagenhaft) and Ronnie Hansen in Marshfield. He passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2023, after a short illness. He continued to travel to various job sites east of the Mississippi until his death. Between jobs he lived at his cabin nestled in the woods near Lake Holcombe and pursued his love of fishing and hunting; and, of course, to ride his Harley.

Bud married Kathy Voit, his proclaimed “girlfriend since first grade,” on December 31, 2011. They divorced, but recently reconnected and enjoyed each other’s company.

Bud is survived by Kathy, of Eau Claire, his brothers: Jim (Marge) Schlagenhaft of Madison, and Mark (Tammy) Schlagenhaft of Chili; his sisters: Cheryl (Jim) Sharp of Pemberville, OH, and Barb (Tim) Nysted of Oracle, AZ. Two more children, Charles and Cassandra came from that union. She followed her first husband on his military career. While stationed in Germany, she met a guy from Wisconsin, in a beer tent. The two of them remained friends for years.

She jumped in the car and drove 3 hours to surprise him while he was bowling. They fell in love and were married on June 22, 1996. Her new husband also fell in love with her two children. Together they raised them up as best they could. Camping, fishing, goofy trips and of course garage sales, all good stuff.

Then to their surprise along came another child, Bobbi Jo, what a blessing. Along the way she worked as a restaurant manager, cook, school aid, factory worker and mother. Her faith in God kept her centered.

Later in Life she was introduced to the world of Vintage Clothing. She was known as Ginger DeVille to a lot of wonderful people she loved dearly.

In the fall of 2022 cancer entered her life. She put up a hell of a fight but eventually lost her battle, surrounded by family on November 28, 2023. Tears down here but not up there. I will miss you, my love. Smooch
