Matkovich, Martin, Sr. (30 August 1886 - 5 September 1962)

 

Martin Matkovich, 76, died at his home in Willard Wednesday evening, September 5.  He had suffered from a heart condition for three years.

 

Mr. Matkovich was born August 30, 1886, in Yugoslavia and came to the United States in 1905, settling in Minnesota.


He was married at Virginia, Minn., on August 14, 1908, to Theresa Kocyan.  They lived there for a time and then moved to Marion, Va.  In 1914, they settled on a farm near Willard.  He retired from farming in May, 1946, and had resided in Willard since.

 

For several years he was the Town of Hendren clerk, and was a member of the school board.

 

He is survived by his wife; Three daughters and three sons: Mrs. Andrew (Ann) Wrana of Milwaukee; Mrs. Samuel (Emelia) Bertrand of Detroit, Mich.; Mrs. Leonard (Marie) Rauen of Burlington; Louis of Willard; John of Bellevue, Wash.; and Martin, Jr., of Milwaukee.  Also surviving are three brothers, John Matkovich of Virginia and Frank and Peter Matkovich of Milwaukee.

 

Funeral services were held Saturday morning from the Holy Family Catholic Church in Willard, with the Rev. Mirko Sylvester officiating. Burial was made in the Holy Family Cemetery.

 

Pallbearers were: Joseph Lunka, John Lesar, Anton Debevec, Mike Klapatauskas, Frank Volovsek and Paul O’Black.

 

Relatives and friends from away attended from Detroit, Mich., Bellevue, Wash.; Milwaukee, Burlington, Loyal, West Allis and from the Greenwood and Willard areas.
