Cross, Mary (24 Jan 1855 - 7 Apr 1914)

Mrs. Alexander Cross died suddenly Tuesday noon of heart trouble, from which she had been ailing for some weeks.  She was born Mary Wessells in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Jan. 24, 1855.  When an infant she came to West Salem with her parents and soon after became an orphan.  She came here at the age of about seven years and made her home with Mrs. Mary Foote.  She was united in marriage to Alexander Cross in 1875 and two children were born to them, Harry and Helen.  Deceased is survived by her daughter.  She was a member of the Congregational Church for over 22 years and during her life was an active worker in this church.  She was a woman of many excellent traits and was a sincere friend and beloved by all who knew her intimately.  Her sudden death was a shock to the entire community.  The funeral will be held this afternoon at the home and interment will be made in the Neillsville Cemetery.  Deceased is also survived by two brothers and one sister, W.L. Wessells of Elgin, Ill., John Wessells of Brooklyn, Mrs. Geo. Farnsworth of Dundee, Ill., sister-in-law Miss Virginia Cross of Eau Claire, and Mrs. M.H. McQuade of Newitt, Colo., and brother-in-law, Jerry Cross of this city.
