MODERN WOODMEN IN THE WAR. Coamo, Porto Rico, Aug. 24. –Special.

The Modern Woodman lodge is largely represented in the Third regiment. On Friday, Aug. 19, 1898, as a lodge, the several camps represented, met and attended a funeral service held at the graveside of the late Fred J. Vought, a private of Co. L, from Sparta, one of the men whose death was caused by the bursting of a Spanish shell on Friday, Aug. 13. The Rev. C. E. Butters of Tomah camp, led in the services and was assisted by Corp. Chandler of Camp 369 (?), La Crosse, using the Modern Woodman Ritual. It is the intention of the Woodmen in the Third to mark their deceased brother’s grave with a suitable tombstone, and also to mark the spot where he received his death wound. Vought was but 24 years of age, and lived for a long time in Baraboo, though enlisting in Sparta, and ever proved himself a good brother as a gentleman. Woodmen present at the services were Rev. C. E. Butters, Tomah, Wis., G. E. Bacon, Wauwatosa; F. De Line, J. P. Bellmer, J. G. Brackett, Security Camp, 5374, Eau Claire; C. B. Stolts, Union Camp, 4567, Hixon; Ed. H. Schmidt, Pine Camp, 1261, Menomoale; T. R. Christie, F. S. Shimian, Jas. Powers, Camp 4945, Superior; F. O. Lindquist, Royal Camp, 4508, West Superior; A. Chandler, Gateway City Camp 360, La Crosse. In the order the deceased soldier carried an insurance of $2,000. PERCY C. ATKINSON.
