Stevens, Elias W. & Mary R.

Spencer Advance, Spencer, Marathon & Clark Co., Wisconsin (20 Jan. 1881 - 14 Jul 1881), Elias W. Stevens, publisher; Elbert E. Stevens, Local Editor.

Introduction (20 Jan. 1881)

In harmony with universal custom it seems necessary in launching a new enterprise upon the sea of public patronage and criticism that the projector of the enterprise shall proclaim his intentions, purposes, etc.  Especially is this the case in the publications of a newspaper as people want to know what is going to be the character of the new publication, what policy will be advocated, and what will be its political complexion.

Perhaps the motto at the head of the paper is a sufficient indication of what it will aim to accomplish but a few words on addition may serve to make the motto more comprehensive.  Material interest pertains to all that promotes the growth and advancement of a place in business and the improvement of real estate.  It is conceded by all that no one thing can do more to build up a town, and increase its business than a good local paper.  The ADVANCE will use all honorable means to promote the growth, and increase the commercial interests of Spencer.

Socially there is room for improvement to every community.  The social instinct in humanity, though a gift of the bountiful Creator, needs cultivation, under proper restraints, to ensure wholesome development.  Much that is recognized as sociality is mere gossip, in which it often happens that a neighbor's character is handled in a manner that fairly demolishes the "golden rule."

The tendency of a good newspaper, or magazine, is to suggest topics and themes for consideration that will be elevated.

It is a coincidence worthy of note that this 20th day of January is the 28th anniversary of the marriage of the publisher of this paper.  This is longer than many are permitted to walk together on Life's pilgrimage, yet how short the time appears in a retrospective view.

Seven children have come to our home, six of whom remain, but one is "over there," having crossed the flood eight years ago, at two years of age, and is a tie that binds those who remain to that fairer clime.  How rapidly the years come and go, verifying the language of inspiration.  "We spend our years as a tale that is told."

It is now nearly thirty five years since the writer, then but a boy, came to this state.  At that time there were seven in father's family, all apparently in the best of health, but now only two remain--mother and our self.  Thus this great inn, the world, "is evacuated and replenished by troops of succeeding pilgrims."  How important for all to think of "the things that are not acco. for the things that are seen are temporal, but the things that are not seen are eternal.
